In line bisection right-brain-damaged patients with left spatial neglect show a rightward deviation, with respect to the line's physical center. In word bisection ortho-phonological features of the stimulus' final (right-sided) part modulate performance of both patients and healthy participants (Veronelli, Vallar, Marinelli, Primativo, & Arduino, 2014). We investigated the role of linguistic factors in sentence bisection, in patients with and without neglect, and control participants. The effects of information in the right-sided part of the sentence (Experiment #1), and of lexical and syntactic violations (Experiment #2) were assessed. Neglect patients showed an overall rightward bias, larger than those of patients without neglect and controls. The neglect patients' bias was modulated by stimulus type, decreasing from lines, to letter strings and to all types of sentences. In sum, in visuo-manual sentence bisection a basic linguistic mechanism, such as sentence readability, brings about a more leftward appreciation of the stimulus, reducing the neglect patients' rightward bias.

In this study, we focus on sentence splitting, a subfield of text simplification, motivated largely by an unproven idea that if you divide a sentence in pieces, it should become easier to understand. Our primary goal in this study is to find out whether this is true. In particular, we ask, does it matter whether we break a sentence into two, three, or more? We report on our findings based on Amazon Mechanical Turk.

Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a neuropsychological syndrome, typically caused by lesions of the right hemisphere, whose features are the defective report of events occurring in the left (contralesional) side of space and the inability to orient and set up actions leftwards. Multisensory integration mechanisms, largely spared in USN patients, may temporally modulate spatial orienting. In this pilot study, the effects of an intensive audio-visual Multisensory Stimulation (MS) on USN were assessed, and compared with those of a treatment that ameliorates USN, Prismatic Adaptation (PA).

The human brain has a remarkable capacity to focus processing resources based on the features and the relevance of the task at hand. The two cerebral hemispheres contribute differentially to this capacity, with the left hemisphere linguistic and right hemisphere visuo-spatial abilities each offering unique contributions. For example, previous research has established that healthy participants set the subjective mid-point of written sentences more leftwards of center, compared to unpronounceable letter strings or simple lines.

Prism adaptation (PA) has proven to be effective in alleviating many signs of unilateral spatial neglect (USN).
