The preparation of typically thermodynamically unstable polymorphic structures is a challenge. However, solid surfaces are well established aids for the formation and stabilization of polymorphic structures within, for instance, organic electronics. In this study, we report the stabilization of a pharmaceutically relevant substance via a solid surface at ambient conditions. Form III of paracetamol, which is typically unstable in the bulk at standard conditions, can be stabilized with a model silica surface by a standard spin coating procedure followed by rapid heat treatment. Such a preparation technique allows the use of atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements revealing detailed information on the morphology and structure of the polymorph. Furthermore, the results exhibit that this polymorph is stable over a long period of time revealing surface mediated stabilization. These findings demonstrate a novel approach to provide thermodynamic stability when applied to similar molecules with specific applications.

A multiomic study of the structural characteristics of type A and B influenza viruses by means of highly spectrally resolved Raman spectroscopy is presented. Three virus strains, A H1N1, A H3N2, and B98, were selected because of their known structural variety and because they have co-circulated with variable relative prevalence within the human population since the re-emergence of the H1N1 subtype in 1977. Raman signatures of protein side chains tyrosine, tryptophan, and histidine revealed unequivocal and consistent differences for pH characteristics at the virion surface, while different conformations of two C-S bond configurations in and methionine rotamers provided distinct low-wavenumber fingerprints for different virus lineages/subtypes.

In situ polymerization strategies hold great promise for enhancing the physical interfacial stability in solid-state batteries, yet (electro)chemical degradation of polymerized interfaces, especially at high voltages, remains a critical challenge. Herein, we find interphase engineering is crucial for the polymerization process and polymer stability and pioneer an in situ polymerization-fluorination (Poly-FR) strategy to create durable interfaces with excellent physical and (electro)chemical stabilities, achieved by designing a bifunctional initiator for both polymerization and on-surface lithium donor reactions. The integrated in situ fluorination converts LiCO impurities on LiNiCoMnO (NCM811) surfaces into LiF-rich interphases, effectively inhibiting the aggressive (de)lithiation intermediates and protecting the interface from underlying chemical degradation, thereby surpassing the stability limitations of polymerization alone.

In this study, we developed a multifunctional nanoplatform to address the limitations of strictly acidic pH for the Fenton reaction involving FeO and the low efficiency of mono treatments. The hybrid material, FeO@Cu-TCPP, was assembled through hydrophobic interactions of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated on its surface. The efficiency of the Fenton reaction using FeO was significantly enhanced by the photo-Fenton process in the presence of Cu-TCPP.

Nanohybrids combining phenylboronic acid-modified carbon dots (PCDs) and proteinase K have been engineered for addressing the formidable challenges of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against bacterial biofilm infections, overcoming biofilm barrier obstruction, the limited diffusion of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the inadequate ROS generation of traditional photosensitizers. PCDs are formulated for superior water solubility and robust singlet oxygen (O) production, mitigating issues related to dispersion and aggregation-induced quenching typical of conventional photosensitizers. The conjugation of phenylboronic acid to CDs not only enhanced O generation through increased electron-hole separation but also imparted strong bacterial binding capabilities to the PCDs, enabling broad-spectrum sterilization by maximizing the ROS-mediated bacterial destruction.
