We propose a ground-breaking approach by an upside-down vision of the Au/TiO2 nano-system in order to obtain an enhanced photocatalytic response. The system was synthesized by wrapping Au nanoparticles (∼8 nm mean diameter) with a thin layer of TiO2 (∼4 nm thick). The novel idea of embedding Au nanoparticles with titanium dioxide takes advantage of the presence of metal nanoparticles, in terms of electron trapping, without losing any of the TiO2 exposed surface, so as to favor the photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide. A complete structural characterization was made by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The remarkable photocatalytic performance together with the stability of the nano-system was demonstrated by degradation of the methylene blue dye in water. The non-toxicity of the nano-system was established by testing the effect of the material on the reproductive cycle of Mytilus galloprovincialis in an aquatic environment. The originally synthesized material was also compared to conventional TiO2 with Au nanoparticles on top. The latter system showed a dispersion of Au nanoparticles in the liquid environment, due to their instability in the aqueous solution that clearly represents an environmental contamination issue. Thus, the results show that nanometric TiO2 wrapping of Au nanoparticles has great potential in eco-friendly water/wastewater purification.

In an effort to meet the high demand for silver nanostructures in both research and consumer applications, we devise a simple and readily scaleable photochemical method through which silver nanostructures of varying morphologies, sizes, and optical properties can be synthesized using batch and flow photochemical strategies. For the latter we build upon the application of a wrapped-lamp photochemical flow system recently developed by our group to enable sequential irradiation with several wavelengths of LEDs in series in an approach that we describe as "plasmon pushing". We find that this strategy can accelerate the conversion of silver nanoparticle seeds to decahedral and triangular nanostructures, and that with it we have control over the tuning of the size and optical properties of triangular nanostructures in the red and near-IR regions.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are fluorescent materials that have been developed as sensors for measuring the activities of enzymes. However, most sensors to date rely on end-point measurement and empirical functions to correlate enzyme concentrations with fluorescence responses. Less emphasis is put on analyzing time-dependent fluorescence responses and their connections with enzymatic kinetics.

The development of prophylactic cancer vaccines typically involves the selection of combinations of tumour-associated antigens, tumour-specific antigens and neoantigens. Here we show that membranes from induced pluripotent stem cells can serve as a tumour-antigen pool, and that a nanoparticle vaccine consisting of self-assembled commercial adjuvants wrapped by such membranes robustly stimulated innate immunity, evaded antigen-specific tolerance and activated B-cell and T-cell responses, which were mediated by epitopes from the abundant number of antigens shared between the membranes of tumour cells and pluripotent stem cells. In mice, the vaccine elicited systemic antitumour memory T-cell and B-cell responses as well as tumour-specific immune responses after a tumour challenge, and inhibited the progression of melanoma, colon cancer, breast cancer and post-operative lung metastases.

Fuel cells have become increasingly important in recent years because of their high energy efficiency and low environmental impact. However, key challenges remain in the widespread adoption of fuel-cell vehicles, including reducing Pt usage in catalysts and improving their durability. In this study, a high-performance Pt@carbon-dot-film core-shell catalyst was successfully synthesized using a nonequilibrium reaction field, , solution plasma (SP) process, by adjusting the electrolyte pH.

Chiral plasmonic nanomaterials have attracted significant awareness due to their applications in chiral catalysis, biosensing, photonics, and separation. Constructing plasmonic core-shell nanomaterials with geometric chirality and desirable optical chirality is a crucial yet challenging task for extending the range of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials. Here, a two-step method is reported for the synthesis of Gold (Au) branches wrapped silver (Ag) nanocubes (L/DBAg@Au) with strong and tunable circular dichroism (CD) signals under the regulation of L/D-cysteine (L/D-Cys).
