When a piston drives a shock in a multicomponent plasma, residual separation of the ion species persists close to the piston-plasma boundary, long after the shock has propagated away from the boundary and has reached a (nearly) steady-state solution. This effect is observed in hybrid particle-in-cell simulations with two kinetic ion species and fluid electrons. It is a consequence of the different dynamics experienced by ions of different mass and charge-to-mass ratio and must be taken into account to properly model the physics of species separation in collisional plasma shocks.

Enhancement of Harmonic Heating by Magnetized Plasma Series Resonance in Capacitive Radio Frequency Discharges.

We present a novel resonance mode in capacitive radio frequency (rf) discharges in the presence of an oblique magnetic field at low pressures. We observe the self-excitation of high-frequency harmonics of the current in magnetized capacitive rf discharges through the magnetized plasma series resonance (MPSR) induced by applying a low-frequency power. Utilizing an equivalent circuit model, we reveal that these harmonics arise from the hybrid combination of the magnetic gyration of electrons and the PSR.

The relaxation of a weakly collisional plasma, which is of fundamental interest to laboratory astrophysical plasmas, can be described by the self-consistent Boltzmann-Poisson equations with the Lenard-Bernstein collision operator. We perform a perturbative (linear and second-order) analysis of the Boltzmann-Poisson equations and obtain exact analytic solutions which resolve some longstanding controversies regarding the impact of weak collisions on the continuous spectra, the discrete Landau eigenmodes, and the decay of plasma echoes. We retain both damping and diffusion terms in the collision operator throughout our treatment.

In omnigenous magnetic fields, charged particles are perfectly confined in the absence of collisions and turbulence. For this reason, the magnetic configuration is optimized to be close to omnigenity in any candidate for a stellarator fusion reactor. However, approaching omnigenity imposes severe constraints on the spatial variation of the magnetic field.

A new thermal helium beam diagnostic has been implemented in the outer lower divertor of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The purpose of this diagnostic is to measure two-dimensional profiles of electron density (ne) and temperature (Te) with high temporal and spatial resolution. The geometry of the lines of sight is chosen to avoid the influence of prompt recycling and to optimize the resolution without significantly impacting the divertor structure.

Dreicer generation is one of the main mechanisms of runaway electron generation in weakly ionized plasmas. It is often described as a diffusive flow from the Maxwellian core into high energies under the effect of the electric field. In this Letter we demonstrate a critical role of the binary nature of inelastic collisions in weakly ionized plasma during tokamak startup, where some electrons experience virtually no collisions during acceleration to the critical energy.
