Neural field models are used to study macroscopic spatiotemporal patterns in the cortex. Their derivation from networks of model neurons normally involves a number of assumptions, which may not be correct. Here we present an exact derivation of a neural field model from an infinite network of theta neurons, the canonical form of a type I neuron. We demonstrate the existence of a "bump" solution in both a discrete network of neurons and in the corresponding neural field model.

Hippocampal representations of space and time seem to share a common coding scheme characterized by neurons with bell-shaped tuning curves called place and time cells. The properties of the tuning curves are consistent with Weber's law, such that, in the absence of visual inputs, width scales with the peak time for time cells and with distance for place cells. Building on earlier computational work, we examined how neurons with such properties can emerge through self-supervised learning.

Blink-related oscillations (BROs) are newly discovered neurophysiological brainwave responses associated with spontaneous blinking, and represent environmental monitoring and awareness processes as the brain evaluates new visual information appearing after eye re-opening. BRO responses have been demonstrated in healthy young adults across multiple task states and are modulated by both task and environmental factors, but little is known about this phenomenon in aging. To address this, we undertook the first large-scale evaluation of BRO responses in healthy aging using the Cambridge Centre for Aging and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN) repository, which contains magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from a large sample ( = 457) of healthy adults across a broad age range (18-88) during the performance of a simple target detection task.
