A new record of rare alpheid shrimp Amphibetaeus jousseaumei (Coutière, 1896) (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae) is presented based on material collected from Qeshm Island, Iran, the Persian Gulf. This is the first record of the species for the Iranian waters as well as the second record and re-description of A. jousseaumei from its original description given by Coutière (1896). Besides, a new alpheid shrimp species Athanopsis tarahomii sp. nov. is described from the same locality. The new species can be clearly separated from all remaining species of the genus Athanopsis by deep rostrum curved downward and the presence of well marked blunt extra-cornea tooth on carapace.

Non-invasive bioimaging techniques like X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT), combined with contrast-enhancing techniques, allow the 3D visualization of the central nervous system , without the destruction of the sample. However, quantitative comparisons of the most common fixation and contrast-enhancing protocols are rare, especially in marine invertebrates. Using the snapping shrimp () as a model, we test three common fixation and staining agents combinations to prepare specimens prior to μCT scanning.

Article Synopsis
  • The newly described alpheid shrimp, Automate isabelae, was initially identified from stomach contents of lane snapper in Florida.
  • A. isabelae is reported for the first time in the south-western Atlantic from Araçá Bay, Brazil, marking a significant expansion of its known distribution.
  • The study includes a first-time illustration of A. isabelae's color pattern and compares it to its related species, A. rugosa, highlighting key differences.

(Coutière, 1897) is one of the first described species in the alpheid genus Coutière, 1897, a name later invalidated and replaced by Holthuis, 1955. The species was described based on material from Djibouti and was initially characterised by the presence of a pronounced, posteriorly extending carina on the mid-dorsal line of the carapace, a shoulder-like elevation of the orbital hoods, and a red-banded colour pattern. Relying mainly on morphological features, various authors reported from several localities in the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to southern China and Australia.
