In this research, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was investigated using ultrasound (US), ozone (O3) and ultrasound/ozone oxidation process (UOOP). It was proved that ultrasound significantly enhanced SMX ozonation by assisting ozone in producing more hydroxyl radicals in UOOP. Ultrasound also made the rate constants improve by kinetics analysis. When ultrasound was added to the ozonation process, the reaction rate increased by 6-26% under different pH conditions. Moreover, main intermediates oxidized by US, O3 and UOOP system were identified. Although the main intermediates in ozonation and UOOP were similar, the introduction of ultrasound in UOOP had well improved the cleavage of S-N bond. In this condition SMX become much easier to be attacked, which led to enhanced SMX removal rate in UOOP compared to the other two examined processes. Finally, the SMX degradation pathways were proposed.

Treatment of oil-based drilling cuttings by floatation-advanced oxidation two-step process.

RSC Adv

January 2024

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Southwest Petroleum University 8 Xindu Avenue, Xindu District Chengdu Sichuan 610500 P. R. China +8602883037346 +8602883037346.

In this paper, a floatation-advanced oxidation two-step process was proposed for deep oil removal of oil-based drilling cuttings (OBDC). In the first stage, a novel and simple degreasing solution was prepared and most of the base oil contained by OBDC was removed by flotation; in the second stage, the oil content of OBDC was further reduced by combined ultrasound + ozone (US + O) advanced oxidation. The recommended degreasing solution was a mixture of methanol, ammonium chloride, and water with a mass ratio of 1.

Mechanisms of deoxynivalenol (DON) degradation during different treatments: a review.

Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr

July 2022

Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the main trichothecenes, that causes health-related issues in humans and animals and imposes considerable financial loss to the food industry each year. Numerous treatments have been reported in the literature on the degradation of DON in food products. These treatments include thermal, chemical, biological/enzymatic, irradiation, light, ultrasound, ozone, and atmospheric cold plasma treatments.

Combined ultrasound-ozone treatment for reutilization of primary effluent-a preliminary study.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2021

Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture (DPIA), University of Udine, Via del Cotonificio 108, 33100, Udine, Italy.

The present work is a preliminary study on the potential of low-frequency ultrasound irradiation coupled with O process for the disinfection of a primary effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant preserving nutrient levels (in particular nitrogen and phosphorous), for its possible reuse in civil, industrial, and agricultural sectors. The treated water could be reused, after appropriate dilution, contributing to the circular economy perspective and reducing the need for both chemical fertilizer addition and freshwater supply. The effect of different specific ultrasonic energies and ozone doses was assessed on a bench-top system, composed of an ultrasonic reactor and a semi-batch ozonation vessel.

The creation of the modern world requires many industrial sectors, however, sustainability needs to be considered while developing industries. In particular, organic pollutants generated by many of these industries contaminate the environment leading to health and other issues. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been introduced to remove organic pollutants present in wastewater.

Department of Environmental Engineering & Innovation and Development Center of Sustainable Agriculture & Research Center of Sustainable Energy and Nanotechnology, National Chung Hsing University, 250 Kuo-Kuang Road, Taichung, Taiwan. Electronic address:

This study investigated the degradation efficiency of BTA using combination of ultrasound (US), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and ozone. The effects of different operational parameters were investigated to optimize the process performance. The results showed that the highest removal efficiency was reached at neutral pH, ozone = 6.
