Self-assembled core-shell structured rare-earth nanoparticles (TbErAs) are observed in a III-V semiconductor host matrix (In0.53Ga0.47As) nominally lattice-matched to InP, grown via molecular beam epitaxy. Atom probe tomography demonstrates that the TbErAs nanoparticles have a core-shell structure, as seen both in the tomographic atom-by-atom reconstruction and concentration profiles. A simple thermodynamic model is created to determine when it is energetically favorable to have core-shell structures; the results strongly agree with the observations.

Bottlebrush polymers are complex architectures with densely grafted polymer side chains along polymeric backbones. The dense and conformationally extended chains in bottlebrush polymers give rise to unique properties, including low chain entanglement, low critical aggregation concentrations, and elastomeric properties in the bulk phase. Conjugated polymers have garnered attention as lightweight, processible, and flexible semi-conducting materials.

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been used as a potential nanocarrier for photosensitizers (PSs), which have demonstrated a great deal of promise in achieving an effective photodynamic therapy (PDT) for deep-seated tumors. However, overcoming biological barriers to achieve mitochondria-targeted PDT remains a major challenge. Herein, CD44- and mitochondria-targeted photodynamic nanosystems were fabricated through the self-assembly of hyaluronic acid-conjugated-methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-diethylenetriamine-grafted-(chlorin e6-dihydrolipoic acid-(3-carboxypropyl)triphenylphosphine bromide) polymeric ligands (HA-c-mPEG-Deta--(Ce6-DHLA-TPP)) and NaErF:Tm@NaYF core-shell UCNPs (termed CMPNs).

We investigate the phase ordering (pattern formation) of systems of two-dimensional core-shell particles using Monte Carlo (MC) computer simulations and classical density functional theory (DFT). The particles interact via a pair potential having a hard core and a repulsive square shoulder. Our simulations show that on cooling, the liquid state structure becomes increasingly characterized by long wavelength density modulations and on further cooling forms a variety of other phases, including clustered, striped, and other patterned phases.
