There has been much interest in the effect of adsorbate alignment in a surface reaction. Here we show its significance for an electron-induced reaction occurring along preferred axes of the asymmetric Cu(110) surface, characterized by directional copper rows. By scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we found that the heterocyclic aromatic reagent, physisorbed meta-iodopyridine, lay with its carbon-iodine either along the rows of Cu(110), "A", or perpendicular, "P". Electron-induced dissociative attachment with the C-I bond initially along "A" gave a chemisorbed I atom and chemisorbed vertical pyridyl, singly surface-bound, whereas that with C-I along "P" gave a chemisorbed I atom and a horizontal pyridyl, doubly bound. An impulsive two-state model, involving a short-lived antibonding state of C-I, accounted for the different product surface binding in terms of closer Cu···Cu atomic spacing along "A" accommodating only one binding site of the pyridyl ring recoiling from I and wider spacing along "P" accommodating simultaneously both binding sites, N-Cu and C-Cu, in the meta-position on the recoiling pyridyl ring. STM studies combined with dynamical modeling can be seen as a way to improve understanding of the role of surface alignment in determining reactive outcomes in induced reaction at asymmetric crystalline surfaces.

This research explores the biosorption of Rhodamine B (Rd-B) and Sunset Yellow (SY) dyes using cross-linked chitosan-alginate (Ch-A) biocomposite beads, combining experimental investigations with theoretical studies to elucidate the biosorption mechanisms. The biocomposite beads were synthesized through an eco-friendly cross-linking method, and their structural properties were characterized using various characterization techniques. Complementary theoretical studies using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and molecular dynamics (MD) calculations provided insights into the molecular interactions between the dyes and the biocomposite beads.

The pervasive presence of toluene in aquatic environments, primarily due to oil spills and industrial effluents, necessitates the development of effective and sustainable remediation strategies. This study introduces ZIF-8@DES-treated loofah sponge (ZIF-8@DLS), a novel adsorbent composite material, synthesized via an in situ process that integrates the high surface area of ZIF-8 with the natural loofah sponge. The composite was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confirming the successful loading of ZIF-8 onto the loofah substrate.

The green and facile biobased functional materials have attracted great attention due to the promising potential to deal with the water pollution of toxic selenium ions that act as a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. The development of cheap and eco-friendly approaches to remove SeO is of great significance for the safety of drinking water. However, there are some disadvantages in most of the employed methods, such as poor removal capability, high cost, and unsustainability.

This paper investigates the use of spent tyre rubber as a precursor for synthesising adsorbents to recover rare earth elements. Through pyrolysis and CO activation, tyre rubber is converted into porous carbonaceous materials with surface properties suited for rare earth element adsorption. The study also examines the efficiency of leaching rare earth elements from NdFeB magnets using optimised acid leaching methods, providing insights into recovery processes.

In this work, a novel adsorbent from alginate, zeolite and biochar has been made through one-pot synthesis route with highly compatible Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) modification. This gave ultra-high Ni removal of 1205 mg/g in batch mode while treating almost 200 L of solution in column mode with 1171 mg/g capacity, which are the one of the highest reported values. The Point of Zero Charge (pH) for Ni removal was determined to be 5, with optimal removal efficiency being observed at pH 7, indicating a negative surface charge of the ABPC beads, which aligns with the anionic charge provided by SDS enhancement.
