The crystal and molecular structure of the 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) complex with 2,5-dibromo-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone (bromanilic acid, BRA) has been studied and the results are compared with TMP CLA (2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone (chloranilic acid, CLA) complex. The X-ray structure of TMP BRA complex indicates the formation of dimeric units, in which two BRA(-) anions are connected by two O-H···O (2.646(2) Å) hydrogen bonds, whereas the cations and anions are joined together by strong N(+)-H···O(-) (2.657(2) Å) hydrogen bonds. The results are analyzed in terms of both the methyl group surroundings and the C-H···O and N(+)-H···O(-) (or N···H-O) bridge formations. Both effects, the strength of the N(+)-H···O(-) hydrogen bonds and steric hindrance for the rotations, are responsible for the CH3 group dynamics. For the TMP CLA and TMP BRA complexes, the inelastic neutron backscattering spectra were also investigated. In the case of TMP CLA, four tunneling signals have been observed in the energy range ±30 μeV, which indicates four inequivalent methyl groups in the crystal structure at the lowest temperature. No tunneling splitting is observed in the case of the TMP BRA complex, most probably due to the overlapping with the elastic peak. The tunneling results are consistent with the (1)H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time investigations in a wide temperature range, which also point to the CH3 group tunneling effect in the case of TMP CLA.

Reducing the toxicity caused by antibiotics on bacterial communities in the soil is one of the great challenges of this century. For this, the effectiveness of amending the soil with different bioadsorbents such as crushed mussel shell (CMS), pine bark (PB) and biomass ash (BA), as well as combinations of them (CMS + PB and PB + BA) was studied at different doses (0 g kg to 48 g kg). This work reveals the contrasting reactivity of amine/E(C6F5)3 (E = B, Al) Lewis pairs toward linear and cyclic acrylic monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and biorenewable γ-methyl-α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (γMMBL). While mixing of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TMP) and B(C6F5)3 leads to a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP), Et3N reacts with B(C6F5)3 to form disproportionation products, ammonium hydridoborate ionic pair and iminium zwitterion. On the other hand, the stoichiometric reaction of either TMP or Et3N with Al(C6F5)3 leads to clean formation of a classic Lewis adduct (CLA).

Drug susceptibility testing (DST) of rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) are recommended for guiding the antimicrobial therapy. We have evaluated the use of resazurin in Mueller-Hinton medium (MHR) for MIC determination of RGM and compared the results with those obtained with the reference standard broth microdilution in Mueller-Hinton (MH) and with the resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) in 7H9 broth. The MIC of eight drugs: amikacin (AMI), cefoxitin (FOX), ciprofloxacin (CIP), clarithromycin (CLA), doxycycline (DOX), linezolid (LZD), moxifloxacin (MXF) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) were evaluated against 76 RGM (18 species) using three methods (MH, MHR, and REMA) in a 96-well plate format incubated at 37 °C over 3-5 days.
