A technical analysis has been completed for a commercial-scale two-stage gasification-combustion system. The CLEERGAS (Covanta Low Emissions Energy Recovery GASification) process consists of partial combustion and gasification of as-received municipal solid waste (MSW) on a moving grate producing syngas followed by full combustion of the generated syngas in an adjoining chamber and boiler. This process has been in operation since 2009 on a modified 330-tonne day(-1) waste-to-energy (WTE) line in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Material balances determined that the syngas composition is 12.8% H2 and 11.4% CO, the heating value of the gas in the gasifier section is 4098 kJ Nm(-3), and an aggregate molecular formula for the waste is C6H14.5O5. The analysis of gas measurements sampled from the Tulsa unit showed that the gasification-combustion mode fully processed the MSW at an excess air input of only 20% as compared to the 80-100% typically found in conventional WTE moving grate plants. Other important attributes of the CLEERGAS gasification-combustion process are that it has operated on a commercial scale for a period of over two years with 93% availability and utilizes a moving grate technology that is currently used in hundreds of WTE plants around the world.

Biomass storage is an essential requirement in the supply chain of bio-refineries and power plants. This research aims to evaluate the influence of long-term outdoor storage (1 year) of baled rockrose ( L.) shrub biomass on biofuel's quality, pre-treatment processes and on combustion emissions in an industrial boiler.

The objective of this work was to study the influence of temperature on the PCDD/Fs behavior stored in biomass ashes issued from an automatic pilot-scale wood boiler. A mixture of these ashes with a dioxin mass ratio dry based of 5.9 μg kg was used for thermal treatment at temperatures ranging between 200 and 500°C.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) are the key pollutants of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). In this study, the characteristics of 17 toxic 2,3,7,8-substituted congeners in flue gas along six air pollution control devices (APCDs) were investigated in a 400 t/d moving grate furnace located in a typical megacity of Shenzhen, China. The phase distribution and removal efficiency of the different APCDs were analyzed, especially the effect of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device.

A two-fluid model simulation of an industrial moving grate waste incinerator.

Waste Manag

Waste Incineration Tech & Equipment National Engineering Laboratory, Shanghai SUS Environment Co., LTD, Shanghai 201703, China.

CFD modelling and simulation is an effective means of optimizing the design and operation of moving grate waste incinerators. Conventional approach models the grate combustion and the furnace combustion separately by using an in-bed/over-bed coupling procedure. In this paper, a comprehensive two-fluid reacting model that integrates the gas-solid grate incineration and the gas turbulent combustion in one scheme is developed for industrial incinerators.

The study compares the environmental performances of a new-generation, large scale, combustion-based waste-to-energy unit, active since 2010, with those of different "virtual" units, defined in the light of the Best Available Techniques REFerence document (BREF) for Waste Incineration published by the European Community on December 2019. The average performances of these units have been evaluated in terms of air emissions, material consumptions and energy recovery, based on data related to 355 "existing" European waste incineration lines and those established for the future "new" plants. An attributional Life Cycle Assessment has been used to compare and quantify the environmental performances of the selected units, all equipped with a moving grate furnace and similar air pollution control systems.
