Objective: To investigate the vegetative tissues of Coleus forskohlii cultivated in Tongcheng, Hubei Province, and to provide useful information for its planting.

Methods: The root, stem, leaf and enlarged rhizome of Coleus forskohlii were subject to routine paraffin section and staining with safranin and fast green FCF solution before examination by light microscopy.

Results: The secondary tissue was well developed in root, and stem showed a higher percentage of cortex and pitch, and 4 large vascular bundles. Leaf epidermis was covered by lots of trichomes, including glandular hairs, glandular scale and linear non-glandular hairs. Mesophyll tissue was poorly differentiated to palisade and spongy tissues. Enlarged rhizome was the same as normal dicotyledons plants.

Conclusion: Enlarged rhizome, unconspicuous root tuber and poorly differentiated leaf mesophyll cells are 3 main different features of Coleus forskohlii transplanted in Tongcheng. These results provide scientific basis for formulating quality standards, further cultivation and utilization of the plant.

The Plectranthinae clade, which includes genera such as Plectranthus, Ocimum, and Aeollanthus, is well known for its diverse array of diterpenoids. While numerous studies have deepened the understanding of diterpene diversity across the clade, Aeollanthus species remain underexplored, with only two studies focusing on their diterpene profiles. The NMR-based chemical profiling of the EtOAc leaf extract of the rocky and succulent species Aeollanthus buchnerianus Briq.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Plectranthus ornatus is a medicinal plant originally from Africa but adapted to Brazil's climate conditions. It is recognized for its therapeutic properties, particularly for treating liver and stomach diseases, gastritis control, heartburn, and hangover. Therefore, studies on its chemical composition and pharmacological evaluation are important for the safe use of the plant.

Instituto de Química Orgánica General (IQOG-CSIC), Juan de la Cierva 3, 28006 Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Coleus forskohlii supplements (FKSs), popular for weight management due to forskolin, face issues like fraud and adulteration.
  • A new method using Flow Injection Analysis-Mass Spectrometry (FIA-MS) was developed to effectively detect these issues in FKSs.
  • The method revealed that 45% of tested samples did not contain forskolin, and there was a 69% discrepancy between the actual and labeled forskolin content, demonstrating FIA-MS as a reliable technique for quality assessment.

Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia, Mohanpur, West Bengal, 741252, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Forskolin, derived from the roots of Coleus forskohlii, has therapeutic potential and this study aimed to develop a reliable method for regenerating these plants year-round for consistent forskolin production.
  • The researchers found that using 1.5 mg/L meta-topolin increased shoot and leaf output significantly, with optimal results achieved through a combination with auxin.
  • Results showed high plant survival rates during acclimatization, confirmed genetic fidelity with the mother plant, and a notable increase in forskolin levels in the in vitro roots, suggesting this method could support commercial production and conservation efforts.
