Minimizing the invasiveness of traditional trabeculectomy surgery.

J Cataract Refract Surg

From the Allegheny General Hospital (Condon), Pittsburgh, and the Wills Eye Hospital (Moster), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Published: August 2014

Unlabelled: Microinvasive invasive glaucoma surgery has become increasingly popular as a surgical alternative for glaucoma. Although the time-honored trabeculectomy remains the unrivaled contender for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) into the single digits, newer devices are available that attempt to reach similar IOP levels with fewer complications and quicker visual recovery. The Express mini-shunt and the Innfocus microshunt are 2 devices that bring us closer to the goal of repeatable, lower risk surgery; improved patient satisfaction; stabilization of the visual field; and long-term IOP control. The mini-shunt has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, while the microshunt is still under review.

Financial Disclosures: Dr. Condon is a consultant to and speaker for Alcon Laboratories. Dr. Moster has served on the advisory board of, been a consultant to, received honoraria for lectures from, and performed contracted research for Alcon, Inc.

Biomarkers associated with anastomotic leakage after esophagectomy: a systematic review.

Langenbecks Arch Surg

January 2025

Division of General and Foregut Surgery, University of Milan, IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, San Donato Milanese (Milano), Italy.

Purpose: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most important complications that occurs after upper gastrointestinal surgery, registering rates of 20-30% after esophagectomy. The role of systemic inflammatory biomarkers to predict anastomotic leaks is controversial and needs systematization.

Methods: A systematic review based on the PRISMA guidelines criteria was performed.

Thalamic hemorrhage is a type of intracerebral hemorrhage with high disability and mortality rates. Because of its deep bleeding location, irregular shape of the hematoma, and compression of the third ventricle, it is not suitable for craniotomy. This paper reports a case of a 63-year-old male patient who sought medical attention for left-sided basal ganglia and thalamus hemorrhage that broke into the ventricles.

Doxorubicin, a widely used anthracycline antibiotic, has been a cornerstone in cancer chemotherapy since the 1960s. In addition to doxorubicin, anthracycline chemotherapy medications include daunorubicin, idarubicin, and epirubicin. For many years, doxorubicin has been the chemotherapy drug of choice for treating a broad variety of cancers.

Background: Inadequate treatment of acute rejection (AR) in pediatric kidney transplant recipients (KTR) can contribute to early allograft failure. Serum creatinine is an insensitive marker of allograft function, especially in the pediatric population, and may not detect ongoing rejection after treatment. We evaluated the utility of follow-up biopsies to detect persistent inflammation and future episodes of rejection.

Machine learning and deep learning to improve prevention of anastomotic leak after rectal cancer surgery.

World J Gastrointest Surg

January 2025

Department of Minimally Invasive Digestive Surgery, Antoine-Béclère Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de ParisClamart 92140, Haute-Seine, France.

Anastomotic leakage (AL) is a significant complication following rectal cancer surgery, adversely affecting both quality of life and oncological outcomes. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning and deep learning, offer promising avenues for predicting and preventing AL. These technologies can analyze extensive clinical datasets to identify preoperative and perioperative risk factors such as malnutrition, body composition, and radiological features.
