Au25(SR)18 has provided fundamental insights into the properties of clusters protected by monolayers of thiolated ligands (SR). Because of its ultrasmall core, 1 nm, Au25(SR)18 displays molecular behavior. We prepared a Au25 cluster capped by n-butanethiolates (SBu), obtained its structure by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and studied its properties both experimentally and theoretically. Whereas in solution Au25(SBu)18(0) is a paramagnetic molecule, in the crystal it becomes a linear polymer of Au25 clusters connected via single Au-Au bonds and stabilized by proper orientation of clusters and interdigitation of ligands. At low temperature, [Au25(SBu)18(0)]n has a nonmagnetic ground state and can be described as a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic system. These findings provide a breakthrough into the properties and possible solid-state applications of molecular gold nanowires.

DNA has been demonstrated as a powerful platform for the construction of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) into complex three-dimensional assemblies. Despite extensive research, the physical fundamental details of DNA nanostructures and their assemblies with NPs remain obscure. Here, we report the identification and quantification of the assembly details of programmable DNA nanotubes with monodisperse circumferences of a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 10 DNA helix and their pearl-necklace-like assemblies with ultrasmall gold nanoparticles, Au nanoclusters (AuNCs), liganded by -S(CH)NH ( = 3, 6, 11).

Thiolate-gold nanoclusters have various applications. However, most of the synthesis methods require prolonged synthesis times from several hours to days. In the present study, we report a rapid synthesis method for [Au(Cys)] nanoclusters and their application for photobactericidal enhancement.

Fluorescence dynamics of gold nanoclusters (Au and Au ) are studied in the complex and crowded environment of a triblock co-polymer (F127) hydrogel and inside cervical cancer cell, HeLa. In the hydrogel, spherical micelles of F127 remain immobilized with a hydrophobic core (PPO) and a hydrophilic corona (PEO) region. The fluorescence anisotropy decay suggests that the timescale of rotational relaxation in the hydrogel is similar to that in bulk water (viscosity ∼1 cP).

Thiolate-protected metal clusters are materials of ever-growing importance in fundamental and applied research. Knowledge of their single-crystal X-ray structures has been instrumental to enable advanced molecular understanding of their intriguing properties. So far, however, a general, reliable, chemically clean approach to prepare single crystals suitable for accurate crystallographic analysis was missing.
