Photoassimilates such as sugars are transported through phloem sieve element cells in plants. Adapted for effective transport, sieve elements develop as enucleated living cells. We used electron microscope imaging and three-dimensional reconstruction to follow sieve element morphogenesis in Arabidopsis. We show that sieve element differentiation involves enucleation, in which the nuclear contents are released and degraded in the cytoplasm at the same time as other organelles are rearranged and the cytosol is degraded. These cellular reorganizations are orchestrated by the genetically redundant NAC domain-containing transcription factors, NAC45 and NAC86 (NAC45/86). Among the NAC45/86 targets, we identified a family of genes required for enucleation that encode proteins with nuclease domains. Thus, sieve elements differentiate through a specialized autolysis mechanism.

This study presents the development and characterization of high yttrium-content phosphate-based glass-ceramic microspheres for potential applications in bone cancer radiotherapy treatment. The microspheres produced via flame spheroidization, followed by sieving, revealed a lack of aggregation and a narrow size distribution (45-125 μm) achieved across different yttrium oxide to glass ratio samples. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed a significant increase in yttrium content within the microspheres with increasing yttrium oxide to glass ratio samples, ranging from approximately 1-39 mol % for 10Y-50Y microspheres, respectively.

An innovative integrated three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted gastric microtissue electrochemical biosensor was developed in this study for the detection of allergen ovalbumin (OVA). In this system, OVA triggers the release of histamine from gastric microtissue, which then undergoes a redox reaction on the electrode surface, leading to an increase in the peak current. Gelatin methacrylate hydrogel serves as a scaffold for the 3D culture of RBL-2H3 and PC-12 cells for partially restoring allergic reactions in the human body in vitro.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Barcelona, 08028, Barcelona, Spain.

In this paper, copper oxide supported manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (CuO-OMS-2) composite was successfully synthesized and subsequently investigated for the degradation and mineralization of phenol via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. It was confirmed that the incorporation of CuO significantly promoted multivalent metals transition and oxygen vacancies generation. At initial pH 5.

Article Synopsis
  • Biochar, specifically bamboo biochar, is produced from bamboo straw through pyrolysis, which involves heating organic material without oxygen, and it's being studied for its potential benefits in tea garden soils.
  • The study found that adding bamboo biochar improved important soil properties, significantly increasing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus while enhancing microbial diversity and enzyme activity, but reducing soil acid phosphatase activity.
  • Results suggest that bamboo biochar can positively impact soil health, paving the way for further research in ecological restoration of tea garden soils.
