Chantal Mouffe, along with Argentinian political theorist Ernesto Laclau (1935-2014), laid down the bases of discourse theory in 1985. She later developed her work by exploring in more detail how discourse theory formulations influence the analysis of contemporary democracies. Approaching conflict as a product of the encounter with difference, Mouffe sees it as an indelible part of the constitution of social relationships. In this encounter with the author, we seek to reflect upon certain themes and problematics that are central to her work, and upon the implications of her theory for the field of contemporary education.

In adopting reductive instrumentalism as a dominant discourse medical education can be seen to have cultivated a values monoculture resistant to innovation. This culture characteristically retreats to the safety of conservatism rather than diversifying and innovating to embrace values beyond the functional - such as the ethical, aesthetic, and political. Here - where teaching displaces facilitation of learning - training is privileged over education, competence over capability, linearity over complexity, and information over knowledge.

Qualitative research is widely embraced in the social sciences and education. Among the different traditional, modern, and community-oriented qualitative methodologies, we have drawn on our experiences to adopt seven qualitative methodologies: auto/ethnography, narrative inquiry, participatory action research, ethnography, case study, grounded theory, and phenomenology. Despite the abundance of literature on qualitative methodologies, there is still a need for a more focused exploration of participant selection procedures in qualitative studies.
