Objective: To compare pulmonary high-resolution CT (HRCT) findings in patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia to HRCT findings in patients with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonia.

Methods: We studied 124 patients (77 men, 47 women; age range, 20-89 years; mean age, 65.4 years) with P. aeruginosa pneumonia and 44 patients (22 men, 22 women; age range, 36-86 years; mean age, 63.2 years) with CMV pneumonia.

Results: CT findings of consolidation (p < 0.005), bronchial wall thickening (p < 0.001), cavity (p < 0.05), and pleural effusion (p < 0.001) were significantly more frequent in patients with P. aeruginosa pneumonia than in those with CMV pneumonia. Centrilobular nodules, a crazy-paving appearance, and nodules were significantly more frequent in patients with CMV pneumonia than in those with P. aeruginosa pneumonia (all p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Pulmonary HRCT findings, such as bronchial wall thickening, crazy-paving appearance, and nodules may be useful in distinguishing between P. aeruginosa pneumonia and CMV pneumonia.

Key Points: Distinguishing Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia from Cytomegalovirus pneumonia is important. Characteristic features of underlying conditions are present in each pneumonia species. Bronchial wall thickening and cavities are more frequent in Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia. Nodules and a crazy-paving appearance are more frequent in Cytomegalovirus pneumonia.

In this present investigation, plant-mediated synthesis of titanium oxide (TiO) nanoparticles was synthesized from seagrass (Thalassia hemprichi) using the hot plate combustion method (HPCM). Synthesized TiO nanoparticles optical, functional, structural, and morphology properties were analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). SEM analysis confirmed the spherical shape of the TiO nanoparticles were observed in various sizes, viz.

Impact of Multidrug-Resistant Bacterial Colonization on Clinical Characteristics, Antibiotic Treatment, and Clinical Outcomes of Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia.

Lung

January 2025

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Korea University Guro Hospital, 148, Gurodong-ro, Guro-gu, Seoul, 08308, Republic of Korea.

Purpose: To determine effects of colonization with multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) in general wards on characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP).

Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients with HAP admitted to 16 tertiary or university hospitals in Korea from July 2019 to December 2019. From the entire cohort, patients who developed pneumonia in general wards with known colonization status before the onset of pneumonia were included in this study.

Background: Many survivors of lung injury, including those with bacterial pneumonia and COVID-19, suffer from incident dementia. Patients who have had pneumonia and other infections are at a higher risk for developing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) (Chu et al., BBI, 2022, Sipila et al.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most lethal complications in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, critical issues of non-survivors vary and are still unclear in VAP patients.

Methods: The clinical differences between survivors and non-survivors of VAP were retrospectively analyzed in patients hospitalized from April 2023 to March 2024.

Microbial characteristics of bile in gallstone patients: a comprehensive analysis of 9,939 cases.

Front Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory, Shandong Provincial Third Hospital, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Introduction: The exact triggers of gallstone formation remain incompletely understood, but research indicates that microbial infection is a significant factor and can interfere with treatment. There is no consensus on the bile microbial culture profiles in previous studies, and determining the microbial profile could aid in targeted prevention and treatment. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the differences in microbial communities cultured from bile specimens of patients with gallstones.
