Chemical separation has great importance in industrial applications. Separation of xylene isomers still prevails to be one of the most important challenges in chemical industry, due to the large amount of commercial use of p-xylene in the production of beverage bottles, fibers and films. A novel Zn(II)-based dynamic coordination framework based on flexible ether-linkage, exhibiting selective adsorption of p-Xylene over its congener C8-alkyl aromatic isomers at ambient conditions is reported. Notably, no dynamic structure based MOF compound is known in the literature which shows clear preference of p-xylene over other isomers. This type of framework-breathing and guest-induced reversible solid-state structural transformations with unique adsorption selectivity can be exploited purposefully to develop smart functional host materials capable of industrially important chemical separations.

Exploring host-guest interactions to regulate hydrogen-bonding assembly offers a promising approach for developing advanced porous crystal materials (PCMs). However, screening compatible guests with appropriate geometries and host-guest interactions that could inhibit the dense packing of building blocks remains a primary challenge. This study presents a novel guest-induced crystallization (GIC) strategy, guided by thermodynamic calculations, to develop porous hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) using structurally challenging tetrazole building units.

This work presents an adaptive sensor signal-processing approach to enable quantification, using a single gas sensor or a small sensor array, of multianalyte mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of various interferents and humidity for environmental-monitoring applications. Dynamic sensor responses are analyzed by extracting multivariable sensing parameters to provide necessary sensitivity and selectivity. This is achieved by integrating the Levenberg-Marquardt-modified, exponentially weighted, recursive-least-squares-estimation (LM-modified EW-RLSE) algorithm and principal-component analysis (PCA).

Article Synopsis
  • * New membrane materials designed for xylene separation show promise for lower energy consumption, although they haven't been used commercially yet.
  • * A techno-economic analysis reveals that a hybrid membrane process combining pervaporation and organic solvent reverse osmosis could provide significant cost savings compared to traditional methods like the Parex process.

Molecular hosts with functional cavities can emulate enzymatic behavior through selective encapsulation of substrates, resulting in high chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective product formation. It is still challenging to synthesize enzyme-mimicking hosts that exhibit a narrow substrate scope that relies upon the recognition of substrates based on the molecular size. Herein, we introduce a Pd self-assembled water-soluble molecular capsule [ ] () that was formed through the self-assembly of a ligand (4',4‴'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(1',4'-dihydro-[4,2':6',4″-terpyridine]-3',5'-dicarbonitrile)) with the acceptor -[(en)Pd(NO)] [en = ethane-1,2-diamine] ().

Xylene separation is crucial but challenging, especially for the preferential separation of the intermediate-size m-xylene from xylene mixtures. Herein, exploiting the differences in molecular length and alkyl distribution among xylenes, we present a length-matched metal-organic framework, formulated as Al(OH)[OC-CHO-CO], featuring an effective pore size corresponding to m-xylene molecular length combined with multiple negative O hydrogen bond donors distribution, can serve as a molecular trap for efficient preferential separation of the intermediate-size m-xylene. Benchmark separation performance was achieved for separating m-xylene from a ternary mixture of m-xylene/o-xylene/p-xylene, with simultaneous record-high m-xylene uptake (1.
