Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the most common malignant mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. The most common sites of metastasis are the liver and the peritoneum, but gastrointestinal stromal tumors rarely metastasize to the skeletal muscles. Only three cases of gastrointestinal stromal tumor metastasizing to skeletal muscle have been reported in the English literature. Here we present an additional case of skeletal muscle metastasis, and the relevant literature is reviewed.

Case Presentation: A 54-year-old Japanese man presented with a three-month history of an enlarging mass of the left buttock. An excisional biopsy was performed and the tumor was diagnosed as a leiomyosarcoma. However, careful examination of the gastrointestinal tract revealed a tumor located in the small intestine. Surgical resection of the small intestine tumor was performed; histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations identified it as a primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor arising from the small intestine. Despite receiving both chemotherapy and molecular-targeted therapy, our patient died of gastrointestinal bleeding six months after the initial diagnosis.

Conclusions: Because it is a mesenchymal tumor, it is difficult to distinguish a gastrointestinal stromal tumor metastasis to skeletal muscle from other primary soft tissue sarcomas. Although metastasis of gastrointestinal stromal tumor to skeletal muscle is rare, the likelihood of finding metastases in these unusual sites is increasing due to prolonged survival of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumor after the introduction of imatinib therapy. We should include metastases of gastrointestinal stromal tumors as differential diagnosis of spindle cell tumor, and it is necessary to begin appropriate treatment early.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor mimicking perineurioma: A case report.

Cytojournal

November 2024

Department of Pathology, Affiliated Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital, Qingdao University, Yantai, China.

Although gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) can present with various histological characteristics, GIST mimicking perineurioma has not been previously reported. We present the case of a 47-year-old woman diagnosed with GIST after laparoscopic resection of a stomach tumor near the lesser curvature of the gastric body close to the cardia. Morphological features resembled a perineurioma.

Background: Endoscopic resection (ER) and laparoscopic resection (LR) have been widely used for the treatment of non-metastatic gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (gGISTs) (2-5 cm), but there are no selection criteria for their application.

Aim: To provide a reference for the development of standardized treatment strategies for gGISTs.

Methods: Clinical baseline characteristics, histopathological results, and short-term and long-term outcomes of patients who treated with ER or LR for gGISTs of 2-5 cm in Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province from January 2014 to August 2022 were retrospectively reviewed.

An Extremely Rare Case of Colonic Leiomyoma Disguised as Pedunculated Colonic Polyp.

J Gastrointestin Liver Dis

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Los Angeles; Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Division of Digestive Diseases, University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

Colonic leiomyoma is extremely rare and is endoscopically indistinguishable from gastrointestinal stromal tumor. We present a case of colonic leiomyoma disguised as a pedunculated colonic polyp in a 62-year-old male who underwent surveillance colonoscopy.

Background: Gastrointestinal subepithelial lesions (SELs) range from benign to malignant. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) is used widely for pathological diagnosis of SELs. Early diagnosis and treatment are important because all Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) have some degree of malignant potential.

The cellular components of the tumor microenvironment (TME) comprise cancer cells and nonmalignant cells including stromal and immune cells. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles secreted by various types of cells that play a crucial role in intercellular communications within TME. The main goal of this study was to elucidate how exosomes of macrophage cells treated with doxorubicin (DOX) and DOX-loaded cyclodextrin-based nanosponges (DOX-CDNSs), affect melanoma cancer cell proliferation.
