Engineered Polymeric Microspheres with Synergistic Hydrogen-Bonding Nanotraps and Multisite Adsorption for Ultrafast Herbicide Decontamination.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

March 2025

College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Collaborative Innovation Center of Suzhou Nano Science and Technology, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215123, P.R. China.

The ultrafast removal of trace herbicides like paraquat (PQ) and diquat (DQ) from water is urgent yet challenging due to their highwater stability and strong-binding properties. Here, efficient PQ and DQ removal based on hydrogen-bonding nanotraps dominant multisite adsorption were developed. Two crosslinked polymeric microspheres, βCD-PF and γCD-PF, were synthesized from cyclodextrins (CDs) and hexafluorocyclotriphosphazene (HFP).

Benchmarking short-read metagenomics tools for removing host contamination.

Gigascience

January 2025

Genome Analysis Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shenzhen 518120, China.

Background: The rapid evolution of metagenomic sequencing technology offers remarkable opportunities to explore the intricate roles of microbiome in host health and disease, as well as to uncover the unknown structure and functions of microbial communities. However, the swift accumulation of metagenomic data poses substantial challenges for data analysis. Contamination from host DNA can substantially compromise result accuracy and increase additional computational resources by including nontarget sequences.

Background: Biofilm formation in dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) and the consequent microbial contamination of dental chair unit (DCU) water is a significant challenge. The South African government has no explicit requirements for water quality supplied to DCUs or for disinfection protocols for DUWLs.

Aim: To assess bacterial water quality and presence of biofilm-associated organisms in DUWLs of open and closed system DCUs.

The purpose of this work was to demonstrate the ozone efficacy for disinfection of the PHARMODUCT automatic dispensing system for antineoplastic preparation, as a guarantee of a higher grade of cleanliness. While the use of ozone gas disinfection is almost consolidated in food and water treatment, there is a lack of scientific data in the pharmaceutical field. The scope of this study was to demonstrate the ozone efficacy for disinfection of the PHARMODUCT automatic dispensing system, before starting the antineoplastic preparation, in order to ensure a high degree of cleanliness and, at the same time, to define a biodecontamination procedure that could also be translatable to other automated compounding systems on the market.
