This work aims to address key issues in the ballistic performance of ceramic-based composite armor, particularly at the joints of spliced bulletproof panels. The edge structure of C/C-SiC ceramic plates and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is redesigned to superimpose the joint areas. These structurally optimized composite pads are examined by numerical simulation of impact dynamics to understand their anti-penetration performance whose accuracy is then validated by live fire tests.

Elucidating the formation mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial to understand processes in the contexts of combustion, environmental science, astrochemistry, and nanomaterials synthesis. An excited electronic-state pathway has been proposed to account for the formation of 14π aromatic anthracene in the benzyl (b-CH) self-reaction. Here, to improve our understanding of anthracene formation, we investigate CH bimolecular reactions in a tubular SiC microreactor through an isomer-resolved method that combines in situ synchrotron-radiation VUV photoionization mass spectrometry and ex-situ gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Improving fire retardancy and mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomer by acid hydrotropic lignin.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI 53726, USA. Electronic address:

Improving flame retardancy and mechanical strength of lignin-containing polyurethane is a great challenge. In this study, lignin with favorable reactivity and dispersity was extracted from poplar using acid hydrotrope p-TsOH in EtOH. The extracted acid hydrotrope lignin (AHL) was subsequently functionalized with nitrogen and phosphorus (FHL) and reacted with isocyanate to fabricate a fire-retardant polyurethane (FHL-PU).

Background Rapid treatment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) significantly reduces morbidity and mortality rates. Recent studies emphasize the importance of reducing total ischemic time, making first-medical-contact-to-balloon (FMCTB) time a key performance indicator. To improve FMCTB times in patients brought to the Emergency Department (ED) by Emergency Medical Services (EMS), we implemented a "Direct to Lab" (DTL) workflow during the following conditions: weekday daytime hours, when the lab is fully staffed, and for hemodynamically stable STEMI patients presenting via EMS.

Chimp optimization algorithm (CHOA) is a recently developed nature-inspired technique that mimics the swarm intelligence of chimpanzee colonies. However, the original CHOA suffers from slow convergence and a tendency to reach local optima when dealing with multidimensional problems. To address these limitations, we propose TASR-CHOA, a twofold adaptive stochastic reinforced variant.
