Noninvasive evaluations of hormones can contribute to the assessment of health and welfare of animals. Variations in insulin levels and sensitivity, for example, have been linked to health concerns in non-human and human primates including insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart disease, the leading cause of death in zoo-housed gorillas. Few published studies have assessed insulin concentrations in western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), and all did so using serum.

Pulsatile ion transport facilitates the adjusted transfer of substances, meeting the requirements for the gradient and timed separation of multiple components in membrane processes. Responsive nanofiltration membranes are thus currently receiving widespread attention but face limitations due to their narrow performance adjustment range. Herein, hydroxyl functional groups were introduced into electrically responsive nanofiltration membranes to broaden the adjustment range of separation performance through a combination of pore size sieving and functional group interactions, resulting in a greater change in rejection and flux compared to the original membrane.

Introduction: Facility discharges following an elective, primary, total joint arthroplasty are infrequent, but are associated with poor outcomes and significant cost. Therefore, investigating ways to identify patients most likely to be discharged to a facility could improve patient care, reduce costs, and potentially lead to strategies to mitigate these risks.

Methods: A total of 3,198 patients who underwent a total hip or knee arthroplasty between June 2021 and June 2023 were included in this study.

Wireless system for recording evoked potentials.

J Physiol Sci

January 2025

Department of Integrative Neuroscience, Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Toyama, Toyama, Japan. Electronic address:

Experiments measuring evoked potentials require flexible and rapid adjustment of stimulation and recording parameters. In this study, we have developed a recording system and an associated Android application that allow making such adjustments wirelessly. The system consists of 3 units: for stimulation, recording and control.

Neurovisual Training With Acoustic Feedback: An Innovative Approach for Nystagmus Rehabilitation.

Arch Rehabil Res Clin Transl

December 2024

Section of Neurorehabilitation, Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy.

Nystagmus has various clinical manifestations, including downbeat, upbeat, and torsional types, each associated with distinct neurologic features. Current rehabilitative interventions focusing on fixation training and optical correction often fail to achieve complete resolution. When nystagmus coexists with fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), functional impairments worsen, particularly affecting balance.
