What is the most suitable blood collection tube for glucose estimation?

Objectives: Glucose is one of the most frequently measured analytes in laboratories. Most recent studies on glucose stabilities confirm that the sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate (NaF/KOx) tube is far from the gold standard. Citrate tubes have been suggested as the preferred tube type by many institutions. Greiner has introduced a glucose-specific tube (Glucomedics) containing NaF/KOx, citrate, and EDTA to minimise glycolysis. The aim was to determine which tube would be the most suitable for accurate glucose estimation in a routine laboratory setting.

Design And Methods: The study process involved three experiments: (a) participant comparison using lithium heparin plasma as the comparative sample; (b) stability study (0, 1, 2 and 4 h); and (c) minimal fill volume for the citrate and the Glucomedics tubes.

Results: The patient comparison study of lithium heparin plasma showed that EDTA, NaF/KOx, and both citrate and Glucomedics if corrected for dilutional factors produced acceptable results. The stability study up to 4 h showed that the Glucomedics tube was most effective in preventing clinically significant change in glucose concentration at a room temperature. Both citrate and Glucomedics need to be filled within 0.5 mL of the recommended fill volume for acceptable results.

Conclusion: The Glucomedics tube is the most suitable for minimising glycolysis. Further improvements to it (use of correct dilutional factor and the addition of gel separator) would make this tube the benchmark for the most accurate estimation, best diagnosis and patient care decisions.

Background: The objectives of this study are to compare the effect of sodium fluoride and citrate on the stability of glucose in samples maintained at room temperature up to three hours, and to assess the clinical impact in the O'Sullivan test results after changing the additives in the collecting tubes.

Methods: The selected population was pregnant women between the 24th and 28th week of gestation, who were at the health center to undergo the O'Sullivan test as part of the screening program for GDM (gestacional diabetes mellitus). Two blood samples were extracted from each patient: one using a tube with citrate and sodium fluoride buffer (tubes Vacuette Glucomedics citrate, 2 mL, Ref 454347) (tube C) and another containing just sodium fluoride (BD Vacationer tubes FX fluoride, 2 mL, Ref 368920) (tube F).

Background: The aim of our study was to determine the difference between glucose concentration measured 30 min after venipuncture in ice-chilled heparin plasma sample and all currently available citrate buffer-containing tubes (Greiner Glucomedics, Greiner FC Mix and Sarstedt GlucoEXACT) and still widely used sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate (NaF/Kox) tubes from Greiner.

Methods: Blood was collected from 20 healthy volunteers and 20 patients with diabetes into LiH, NaF/KOx, Glucomedics, FC mix and GlucoEXACT tubes. Glucose was measured within 30 min from blood sampling in duplicate on the Architect c8000 analyzer.

Objectives: Citrate buffer additive has been suggested to be of supreme performance in inhibiting glycolysis. However, there is little evidence in the literature regarding the comparability of glucose concentrations in liquid and lyophilized citrate buffer containing tubes. The aim of this study was to compare glucose concentrations in tubes containing liquid (Glucomedics) and lyophilized citrate buffer (Terumo VENOSAFE™ Glycemia) additive, measured immediately after centrifugation.

Background: Delayed sample processing can affect accurate glucose measurement. Our aim was to investigate the stability of glucose in samples collected in serum, sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate (NaF/KOx) and Glucomedics tubes processed according to different controlled pre-centrifugation delays (up to 180 min after venipuncture) in order to simulate prolonged sample transport between venipuncture and centrifugation.

Methods: Samples were collected from healthy volunteers (n=80) into either serum or NaF/KOx and Glucomedics tubes.

Background: Glucose measurements are crucial in diabetes diagnosis. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of liquid citrate acidification in preventing glycolysis and investigate glucose stability in serum, sodium fluoride (NaF/KOx) and Glucomedics tubes.

Methods: Samples from 40 participants were collected in serum, lithium-heparin (LiH), sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate (NaF/KOx) and Glucomedics tubes.
