Copper (Cu) is an essential element and the effects of diets deficient in it are well established. However, the effects of long-term high copper intake are less clear. The chemical form of copper from food sources and its resultant bioavailability is a potentially important factor in its biological activity. X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) was used to determine the chemical forms of Cu in a range of foods that would make significant contributions to total copper absorption in a standard diet, as well as a chlorinated tap water sample. Analysis of the Cu K-edge XANES spectra suggested that Cu existed in both Cu(I) and Cu(II) forms, with the following five model compounds: Cu(I) acetate; Cu(II) acetate; Cu(I)-glutathione; Cu(I)-cysteine; and, Cu(II)-histidine being fitted to the sample spectra. This research suggested that the absorption of dietary copper could vary markedly dependent on the types of food consumed and the different bioavailability of the Cu species they contain.

Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) to generate high-value chemicals under mild conditions acts as an energy-saving and sustainable strategy. However, it is still challenging to develop electrocatalysts with high efficiency and good durability. Here, nickel foam (NF) supported CoCrCe(7.

The development of a metallic copper-based catalyst system remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of highly stable, active, and reusable Cu0 catalyst for the carboboration of alkynes using carbon electrophiles and bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) as chemical feedstocks to afford di- and trisubstituted vinylboronate esters in a regio- and stereoselective manner with appreciable turnover number (TON) of up to 2535 under mild reaction conditions. This three-component coupling reaction works well with a variety of substituted electrophiles and alkynes with broad functional group tolerance.

The idea of coordinating biologically active ligand systems to metal centers to exploit their synergistic effects has gained momentum. Therefore, in this report, three Ru complexes - of morpholine-derived thiosemicarbazone ligands have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopy and HRMS along with the structure of through a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. The solution stability of - was tested using conventional techniques such as UV-vis and HRMS.

Cadmium (Cd) isotopes have recently emerged as novel tracers of Cd sources and geochemical processes. Widespread clay minerals play a key role in Cd migration due to their strong adsorption capacity, but the mechanism of Cd isotope fractionation during adsorption onto clay minerals is poorly understood. Here, we experimentally investigated the adsorption mechanisms of Cd on montmorillonite (2:1) and kaolinite (1:1) by using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy.

Rechargeable zinc batteries (RZBs) are hindered by two primary challenges: instability of Zn anode and deterioration of the cathode structure in traditional aqueous electrolytes, largely attributable to the decomposition of active H2O. Here, we design and synthesize a non-flammable water-in-dimethyl sulfoxide electrolyte to address these issues. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ techniques and computational simulations demonstrate that the activity of H2O in this electrolyte is extremely compressed, which not only suppresses the side reactions and increases the reversibility of Zn anode, but also diminishes the cathode dissolution and proton intercalation.
