Article Abstract

A series of shape-persistent phenylene-ethynylene-naphthylene-butadiynylene macrocycles with different extraannular alkyl groups and intraannular bridges is synthesized by oxidative Glaser-coupling of the appropriate precursors. The intraannular bridges serve in this case as templates that reduce the oligomerization even when the reaction is not performed under pseudo high-dilution conditions. The extraannular as well as the intraannular substituents have a strong influence on the thermal behavior of the compounds. With branched alkyl chains at the periphery, the macrocycles exhibit liquid crystalline (lc) phases when the interior is empty or when the length of the alkyl bridge is just right to cross the ring. With a longer alkyl or an oligoethylene oxide bridge no lc phase is observed, most probably because the mesogene is no longer planar.

Tetrabromo aromatics can be synthesized by the Fischer-Zimmermann condensation of appropriate pyrylium salts with arylene dicarboxylic acid salts. Their cyclization by intramolecular Yamamoto coupling yields strained bicyclophanes with adjustable sizes and different intraannular bridges. All compounds adsorb at the solid/liquid interface on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with submolecular resolution.

Synthetic and structural exploration of [2(4)]tetrathiacalix[2]arene[2]pyrimidines.

A novel class of two atom bridged metacyclophanes-[2(4)]thiacalix[2]arene[2]pyrimidines-has been synthesized via a straightforward S(N)Ar reaction. The conformational properties and intra-annular dimensions of the [2(4)]thiacalix[2]arene[2]pyrimidines were evaluated by X-ray structure analysis and compared with known homothia- and thiacalixarenes. Post-macrocyclization oxidation of the bridging sulfur moieties resulted in a [2(4)]sulfonylcalix[2]arene[2]pyrimidine, which gave access to an unexplored cavity size among sulfonylcalixarenes.

Intraannular photoreactions in pseudo-geminally substituted [2.2]paracyclophanes.

The photoisomerization of the pseudo-geminal tetraene 11 furnishes the cyclooctadiene derivatives 13 and 15 with a completely new type of molecular bridge for a [2.2]paracyclophane which promise many interesting novel applications; the same is true for the photoisomerization of 22 to 23 and 24. The structures of these new hydrocarbons were established by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic analysis; among the noteworthy structural features of 13 and 15 are unusually long carbon-carbon single bonds (>1.

A selection of pseudo-geminally substituted [2.2]paracyclophanes, the alkynes 6, 7, 10, 11 a, and 11 b and the alkenes 8 and 9 were prepared for the study of intraannular reactions between functional groups in direct juxtaposition. Whereas 9 and 10 provide the corresponding cyclobutane and cyclobutene derivatives on irradiation (12 and 13, respectively), the bis-alkynes 7 and 11 b do not lead to a cyclobutadiene intermediate.
