Current theories on the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) maintain that the associated cognitive and behavioral symptoms are caused by aberrant synaptic transmission affecting specific brain circuits. Transgenic mouse models have implicated the involvement of cell adhesion proteins in synaptic dysfunction and ASD pathogenesis. Recently, Aoto et al. (Cell 154: 75-88, 2013) has shown that alternatively spliced neurexin proteins affect the efficacy of AMPA receptor-mediated excitatory currents in both cultured neuronal networks and acute hippocampal slices constituting a potential ASD-related electrophysiological phenotype.

Patterning soft materials with cell adhesion motifs can be used to emulate the structures found in natural tissues. While patterning in tissue is driven by cellular assembly, patterning soft materials in the laboratory most often involves light-mediated chemical reactions to spatially control the presentation of cell binding sites. Here we present hydrogels that are formed with two responsive crosslinkers-an anthracene-maleimide adduct and a disulfide linkage-thereby allowing simultaneous or sequential patterning using force and UV light.

Unlabelled: Pathogenic strains cause cholera using different mechanisms. O1 and O139 serogroup strains use the toxin-co-regulated pilus (TCP) and cholera toxin (CT) for intestinal colonization and to promote secretory diarrhea, while non-O1/non-O139 serogroup strains are typically non-toxigenic and use alternate virulence factors to cause a clinically similar disease. An O39 serogroup, TCP/CT-negative strain, named AM-19226, uses a type III secretion system (T3SS) to translocate more than 10 effector proteins into the host cell cytosol.

A key trait of Eukarya is the independent evolution of complex multicellular (CM) in animals, plants, fungi, brown algae and red algae. This phenotype is characterized by the initial exaptation of cell-cell adhesion genes followed by the emergence of mechanisms for cell-cell communication, together with the expansion of transcription factor gene families responsible for cell and tissue identity. The number of cell types (NCT) is commonly used as a quantitative proxy for biological complexity in comparative genomics studies.

Flotillin 1 and 2 are highly conserved and homologous members of the stomatin, prohibitin, flotillin, HflK/C (SPFH) family. These ubiquitous proteins assemble into hetero-oligomers at the cytoplasmic membrane in sphingolipid-enriched domains. Flotillins play crucial roles in various cellular processes, likely by concentrating sphingosine.

Our objective was to characterize the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomic profiles focusing on cardiometabolic-related protein pathways in individuals on the AD spectrum.
Methods: We performed CSF and plasma-targeted proteomics (276 proteins) from 354 participants of the Brain Stress Hypertension and Aging Program (BSHARP), of which 8% had preclinical AD, and 24% had MCI due to AD.
