An efficient method of calculating the natural bond orbitals (NBOs) based on a truncation of the entire density matrix of a whole system is presented for large-scale density functional theory calculations. The method recovers an orbital picture for O(N) electronic structure methods which directly evaluate the density matrix without using Kohn-Sham orbitals, thus enabling quantitative analysis of chemical reactions in large-scale systems in the language of localized Lewis-type chemical bonds. With the density matrix calculated by either an exact diagonalization or O(N) method, the computational cost is O(1) for the calculation of NBOs associated with a local region where a chemical reaction takes place. As an illustration of the method, we demonstrate how an electronic structure in a local region of interest can be analyzed by NBOs in a large-scale first-principles molecular dynamics simulation for a liquid electrolyte bulk model (propylene carbonate + LiBF4).

Owing to the differences in sedimentary environments in the mining areas of western China, the mechanical properties of rocks in this region are significantly different from those in the central and eastern regions. Therefore, uniaxial cyclic loading-unloading tests were conducted on fine sandstone found in many roof rocks to study the evolution laws of mechanical properties, deformation characteristics, acoustic emission (AE) parameters, and energy under cyclic loading and unloading conditions. The accumulated residual strain, dissipative energy, acoustic emission cumulative ringing counts, and cumulative energy were introduced to characterize the degree of rock damage.

Nematic versus Kekulé Phases in Twisted Bilayer Graphene under Hydrostatic Pressure.

Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, CSIC, E-28049 Madrid, Spain.

We address the precise determination of the phase diagram of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene under hydrostatic pressure within a self-consistent Hartree-Fock method in real space, including all the remote bands of the system. We further present a novel algorithm that maps the full real-space density matrix to a 4×4 density matrix based on a SU(4) symmetry of sublattice and valley degrees of freedom. We find a quantum critical point between a nematic and a Kekulé phase, and show also that our microscopic approach displays a strong particle-hole asymmetry in the weak coupling regime.

Bioinspired Antiswelling Hydrogel Sensors with High Strength and Rapid Self-Recovery for Underwater Information Transmission.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Metal Matrix Composites, Frontiers Science Center for Transformative Molecules, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 800 Dongchuan Road, Shanghai 200240, China.

Hydrogel-based sensors typically demonstrate conspicuous swelling behavior in aqueous environments, which can severely compromise the mechanical integrity and distort sensing signals, thereby considerably constraining their widespread applicability. Drawing inspiration from the multilevel heterogeneous structures in biological tissues, an antiswelling hydrogel sensor endowed with high strength, rapid self-recovery, and low swelling ratio was fabricated through a water-induced phase separation and coordination cross-linking strategy. A dense heterogeneous architecture was developed by the integration of "rigid" quadridentate carboxyl-Zr coordination bonds and "soft" hydrophobic unit-rich regions featuring π-π stacking and cation-π interactions into the hydrogels.

A Molecular Perspective of Exciton Condensation from Particle-Hole Reduced Density Matrices.

Exciton condensation, the Bose-Einstein-like condensation of quasibosonic particle-hole pairs, has been the subject of much theoretical and experimental interest and holds promise for ultraenergy-efficient technologies. Recent advances in bilayer systems, such as transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures, have brought us closer to the experimental realization of exciton condensation without the need for high magnetic fields. In this perspective, we explore progress toward understanding and realizing exciton condensation, with a particular focus on the characteristic theoretical signature of exciton condensation: an eigenvalue greater than one in the particle-hole reduced density matrix, which signifies off-diagonal long-range order.

Minimum Energy Conical Intersection Optimization Using DFT/MRCI(2).

The combined density functional theory and multireference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) method is a semiempirical electronic structure approach that is both computationally efficient and has predictive accuracy for the calculation of electronic excited states and for the simulation of electronic spectroscopies. However, given that the reference space is generated via a selected-CI procedure, a challenge arises in the construction of smooth potential energy surfaces. To address this issue, we treat the local discontinuities that arise as noise within the Gaussian progress regression framework and learn the surfaces by explicitly incorporating and optimizing a white-noise kernel.
