Polysaccharides were extracted from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge using response surface methodology (RSM) with ultrasonication. A Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the extraction parameters to maximize the polysaccharide extraction yield. The polysaccharide SMP-U1 was isolated and characterized; then the antioxidant and antiproliferation activities were evaluated in vitro. The modified optimal conditions were an ultrasonic power of 180 W, an extraction temperature of 54°C, and an extraction time of 32 min, achieving an extraction yield of 40.54±0.25%. The results indicate that SMP-U1 has significant antioxidant activity, scavenging the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. It has also exhibited effect on the proliferation of human breast carcinoma cells Bcap-37 and human esophageal carcinoma cells Eca-109, especially at a concentration of 0.30 mg/mL. In conclusion, SMP-U1 has remarkable in vitro antioxidant and antiproliferation activity, and has potential for application as a natural antioxidant or antitumor agent.

Cisplatin (CIS) is a broad-spectrum anticancer drug widely used in the clinic; however, one of its side effects is that it can cause intestinal damage such as loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea in patients. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is one of the main active substances in green tea, which has the effects of antitumor multiple drug resistance, antioxidation, and antiinflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to explore the protective effect of EGCG on CIS-induced intestinal injury in rats.

Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is an excellent plant that has the concomitant function of both medicine and foodstuff with high nutritional and health-promoting properties. As a pivotal bioactive component mainly existing in the seeds and leaves, seabuckthorn protein and its derived peptides have aroused wide attention owing to their multifaceted pharmacological activities, including anti-hypertensive, hypoglycemic, anti-obesity, anti-freeze, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, sobriety, anti-oxidant and anti-neurodegenerative functions. Despite these promising attributes, the application of seabuckthorn peptides as functional food and medicines are impeded due to lack of a comprehensive understanding of pharmacological activities and intricate structure-activity relationship.

This study aimed to define the antitumor effect of ethanolic extract of Pistacia vera leaves (PEE) toward breast cancer both in vitro and in vivo using dimethyl-benz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-induced breast tumor in adult female rats. PEE showed a potent antioxidant effect toward both DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radicals with IC values of 72.6 and 107.

The genus Chrysanthemum has been widely used as both folk medicine and food in East Asia for thousands of years, serving as a significant source of nutritional and pharmacological value. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, it clears heat and toxic materials and regulates liver function. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that polysaccharides from the genus Chrysanthemum, especially Chrysanthemum morifolium, Chrysanthemum indicum, and Coreopsis tinctoria, are vital representative macromolecules with diverse biological activities, including antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antitumor, and antiviral properties as well as the ability to regulate the gut microbiota.
