Various metal-doped p-type CaFe2O4 photocathodes were prepared in an attempt to improve the low quantum efficiency for photoreaction. CuO and Au doping enhanced the photocurrent by expansion of the absorption wavelength region and plasmon resonance, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis showed that doping with these metals further disturbed the originally distorted crystal structure of CaFe2O4. In contrast, doping with Ag relaxed the distorted crystal structure around the Fe center toward symmetry. Ag doping resulted in improvement of the carrier mobility together with a red-shift of photoabsorption with Ag-doped CaFe2O4 having a 23-fold higher photocurrent than undoped CaFe2O4.

The cleavage and functionalization of carbon-carbon bonds are crucial for the reconstruction and upgrading of organic matrices, particularly in the valorization of biomass, plastics, and fossil resources. However, the inherent kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of C-C σ bonds make this process challenging. Herein, we fabricated a glucose-derived defect-rich hierarchical porous carbon as a heterogeneous catalyst for the oxidative cleavage and esterification of C(CO)-C bonds.

The Fe-N-C catalyst, featuring a single-atom Fe-N configuration, is regarded as one of the most promising catalytic materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the significant activity difference under acidic and alkaline conditions of Fe-N-C remains a long-standing puzzle. In this work, using extensive ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we revealed that pH conditions influence ORR activity by tuning the surface charge density of the Fe-N-C surface, rather than through the direct involvement of HO or OH ions.

Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) has been a cornerstone of modern computing, but it faces challenges as technology scales down, particularly due to the mismatch between reduced storage capacitance and increasing OFF current. The capacitorless 2T0C DRAM architecture is recognized for its potential to offer superior area efficiency and reduced refresh rate requirements by eliminating the traditional capacitor. The exploration of two-dimensional (2D) materials further enhances scaling possibilities, though the absence of dangling bonds complicates the deposition of high-quality dielectrics.

A variety of ZnCdS-based semiconductor nanoparticle heterostructures with extended exciton lifetimes were synthesized to enhance the efficacy of photocatalytic hydrogen production in water. Specifically, doped nanoparticles (NPs), as well as core/shell NPs with and without palladium and platinum co-catalysts, were solubilized into water using various methods to assess their efficacy for solar H fuel synthesis. The best results were obtained with low bandgap ZnCdS cores and ZnCdS/ZnS core/shell NPs with palladium co-catalysts.

Mercury contamination of the environment is extremely hazardous to human health because of its significant toxicity, especially in water. Biomass-derived fluorophores such as carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative sensors that provide comparable efficacy while mitigating the environmental and economic drawbacks of conventional methods. In this work, we report the fabrication of a selective fluorescence-enhancing sensor based on sulfur-doped carbon dots (SCDs) using waste bamboo-derived cellulose and sodium thiosulfate as the soft base dopant, which actively complexes with mercury ions for detection.
