Data from large-scale genome projects, transcriptomics and proteomics experiments have provided scientists with a wealth of information establishing the basis for the investigation of cellular processes. To understand biological function beyond the single gene by the discovery and characterization of functional protein networks, bioinformatics analysis requires information about two additional attributes associated with the gene products: (i) high-level protein function prediction of experimentally uncharacterized proteins and (ii) systematic classification of protein function. This article describes the basic properties of protein classification systems and discusses examples of their implementation.:

Prostate cancer is a disease which poses an interesting clinical question: Should it be treated? Only a small subset of prostate cancers are aggressive and require removal and treatment to prevent metastatic spread. However, conventional diagnostics remain challenged to risk-stratify such patients; hence, new methods of approach to biomolecularly sub-classify the disease are needed. Here we use an unsupervised self-organising map approach to analyse live-cell Raman spectroscopy data obtained from prostate cell-lines; our aim is to exemplify this method to sub-stratify, at the single-cell-level, the cancer disease state using high-dimensional datasets with minimal preprocessing.

Syndromic ichthyoses are a group of disorders whose genetic alterations impact both epidermal and non-epidermal tissues. Therefore, patients present symptoms in other organs. Most are extraordinary and, in some, ichthyosiform desquamation has been poorly described.

Ichthyoses are a heterogeneous group of diseases sharing symptoms and a common etiopathogenic mechanism. Clinically, these diseases are characterized by the presence of erythema and variable degrees of skin thickening and desquamation. Although the affected area, severity, and molecular substrate are very variable, they are all signs of a disruption of the barrier formed during epidermal differentiation.

Purpose: Preimplantation aneuploidy in humans is one of the primary causes of implantation failure and embryo miscarriage. This study was conducted to gain insight into gene expression changes that may result from aneuploidy in blastocysts through RNA-Seq analysis.
Methods: The surplus embryos of preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) candidate couples with normal karyotype and maternal age < 38 were collected following identical ovarian stimulation protocol.

The process of developing new drugs is arduous and costly, particularly for targets classified as "difficult-to-drug." Macrocycles show a particular ability to modulate difficult-to-drug targets, including protein-protein interactions, while still allowing oral administration. However, the determination of membrane permeability, critical for reaching intracellular targets and for oral bioavailability, is laborious and expensive.
