Local melting and modulation of elemental distributions can be induced inside a glass by focusing femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at high repetition rate (>100 kHz). Using only a single beam of fs laser pulses, the shape of the molten region is ellipsoidal, so the induced elemental distributions are often circular and elongate in the laser propagation direction. In this study, we show that the elongation of the fs laser-induced elemental distributions inside a soda-lime glass could be suppressed by parallel fsing of 250 kHz and 1 kHz fs laser pulses. The thickness of a Si-rich region became about twice thinner than that of a single 250 kHz laser irradiation. Interestingly, the position of the Si-rich region depended on the relative positions between 1 kHz and 250 kHz photoexcited regions. The observation of glass melt during laser exposure showed that the vortex flow of glass melt occurred and it induced the formation of a Si-rich region. Based on the simulation of the transient temperature and viscosity distributions during laser exposure, we temporally interpreted the origin of the vortex flow of glass melt and the mechanism of the formation of the Si-rich region.

Residual strain in an epilayer grown on a foreign wafer induces epiwafer's bow, that is often considered undesirable. Wafer bow however, can be advantageous because both the direction and magnitude of strain are vital for the fabrication of various Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), such as resonators. Here strain control is reported for highly mismatched heteroepitaxy of cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) compound semiconductor on silicon (Si), a prized functional material, dependent solely on carbon to silicon ratio (C/Si) during growth.

Polymorphic Localized Heterostructure Design for High-Performance Amorphous/Nanocrystalline Composite Film.

Adv Mater

August 2024

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan, 430070, P. R. China.

Analogous to linear dielectric, amorphous perovskite dielectrics characterized of high breakdown strength and low remanent polarization possess in-depth application in the sea, land, and air fields. Amorphous engineering is a common approach to balance the inverse relationship between polarization and breakdown strength in dielectric ceramic capacitor, however, the low polarization is the major barrier limiting the improvement of energy storage density. To address this concern, the polymorphic localized heterostructure confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) and HADDF images is constructed in BaTiO-Bi(NiZr)O amorphous/nanocrystalline composite film with SiO addition (BT-BNZ-xS, x = 3, 5, 7, 10 mol%).

Effects of leaf silicon on drought performance of tropical tree seedlings.

Biol Lett

March 2024

Departmemt of Plant Ecology, Bayreuth Center of Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER), University of Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Germany.

Elevated leaf silicon (Si) concentrations improve drought resistance in cultivated plants, suggesting Si might also improve drought performance of wild species. Tropical tree species, for instance, take up substantial amounts of Si, and leaf Si varies markedly at local and regional scales, suggesting consequences for seedling drought resistance. Yet, whether elevated leaf Si improves seedling drought performance in tropical forests is unknown.

Mercury-bearing nano-mineral assemblages (Hg-NMAs) are chemically and mineralogically heterogeneous, micrometer-sized aggregates of nanoparticles (NPs) found in contaminated soils and sediments. Although these NMAs control sequestration and release of Hg that is a global contaminant, our understanding is limited with respect to the conditions of different types of Hg-NMAs, the diversity of its minerals, the size distribution of its NPs and whether mineral replacement and alteration reactions in these NMAs result in the release of Hg-bearing NPs. For this purpose, Hg-NMAs in four sediment samples from the Guanajuato Mining District (GMD) in Mexico, a region that was polluted by Hg and silver (Ag) due to historical mining involving Hg amalgamation, are characterized at the micro- and nanoscale.

We demonstrate the linear and nonlinear characterization of a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposited silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRSN) racetrack ring resonator for on-chip applications within the telecommunication wavelength range. The SRSN waveguide parameters are optimized by employing the refractive index profile measured by ellipsometry to achieve flat dispersion in the telecom band. Furthermore, we measure the thermo-optic coefficient of the micro-resonator by analyzing the temperature-dependent transmission spectra and assess it to be 3.
