We present a method to calibrate the light to heat conversion in an aqueous fluid containing nanoparticles. Accurate control of light and heat is of dramatic importance in many fields of science and metal nanoparticles have acquired an increased importance as means to address heat in very small areas when irradiated with an intense light. The proposed method enables to measure the temperature in the environment surrounding nanoparticles, as a function of the exposure time to laser radiation, exploiting the properties of thermochromic cholesteric liquid crystals. This method overcomes the problems of miscibility of nanoparticles in liquid crystals, provides temperature reading at the microscale, since the cholesteric liquid crystal is confined in microdroplets, and it is sensitive to a temperature variation, 28°C-49°C, suitable for biological applications.

Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) are very effective calcium signal decoders due to their unique structure, which mediates substrate-specific [Ca] signalling through phosphorylation. However, Ca-dependence makes it challenging to study CDPKs. This work focused on the effects of the overexpression of native and modified forms of the AtCPK1 gene on the tolerance of tobacco plants to heat and cold.

This study focuses on enhancing solar energy capture efficiency by introducing innovative hybrid nanofluids for use in solar thermal collectors, whose performance largely depends on the absorption properties of the working fluid. The newly developed hybrid nanofluids, MXene/NH2-UiO66 (Zr) (noted as MX/UO66) and MXene/MIL-88B (Fe) (noted as MX/ML88), were synthesized using an in-situ solvothermal method, combining annealed Ti3C2Tx MXenes with water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These nanofluids achieved high efficiency at low concentrations, providing both economic and performance benefits.

During their lifespan, plants are often exposed to a broad range of stresses that change their redox balance and lead to accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The traditional view is that this comes with negative consequences to cells structural integrity and metabolism and, to prevent this, plants evolved a complex and well-coordinated antioxidant defence system that relies on the operation of a range of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants (AO). Due to the simplicity of measuring their activity, and in the light of the persistent dogma that stress-induced ROS accumulation is detrimental for plants, it is not surprising that enzymatic AO have often been advocated as suitable proxies for stress tolerance, as well as potential targets for improving tolerance traits.

Invasive alien plants pose a great threat to local plants and ecosystems. How to effectively alleviate this hazard is an unresolved issue. This study explored the carbon release characteristics of an invasive plant Spartina alterniflora and evaluated the ability of nitrogen removal from shrimp culture wastewater through constructing seawater wetland.

Tumor heterogeneity, immune-suppressive microenvironment and the precise killing of tumor cells by drugs are important factors affecting tumor treatment. In this study, we developed environment-responsive drug delivery system (FM@IQ/PST&ZIF-8/DOX) based on ZIF-8 for tumor photothermal/immunotherapy/chemotherapy synergistic therapy. The prepared FM@IQ/PST&ZIF-8/DOX nanoplatfrom not only has highly drug loading capacity for chemotherapeutic drug-doxorubicin, but also erythrocyte membrance modified on their surface can endow their immunity-escaping property and prolong their blood circulation time.
