Background: The relationship between the autonomic reflex screening test (ARS) and measures of sensory function and structure (quantitative sensory testing (QST) and intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD)) remains uncertain in patients with distal small fiber neuropathy (SFN). The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations among a range of autonomic (quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART), cardiovagal and cardio adrenergic tests and the composite autonomic severity score (CASS)) and somatic sensory measures (QST of vibration, cooling and heat-pain thresholds and IENFD).
Method: 122 patients with clinically suspected sensory neuropathy without motor weakness and with normal nerve conduction studies underwent blinded autonomic reflex screening test (ARS), quantitative sensory testing (QST) and skin biopsy (IENFD) for diagnosis of SFN. The relationship between autonomic and somatic sensory measures was assessed.
Results: There was no association between autonomic function measures (QSART volume, CASS_QSART, CASS_vagal, CASS_adrenergic or total CASS) and small fiber sensory measures (IENFD, cooling or heat-pain thresholds). Weak correlations were noted among some modalities of QST (vibration and cooling thresholds) and IENFD.
Discussion: Autonomic and sensory outcomes are independent (complementary) measures of distal SFN, and should where feasible be used concurrently in the evaluation of SFN.

Deployment-related constrictive bronchiolitis (DRCB) has emerged as a health concern in military personnel returning from Southwest Asia. Exposure to smoke from a fire at the Al-Mishraq sulfur enrichment facility and/or burn pits was reported by a subset of Veterans diagnosed with this disorder. DRCB is characterized by thickening and fibrosis of small airways (SA) in the lung, but whether these are related to toxin inhalation remains uncertain.

Gallbladder mucocele, cholelithiasis, choledocholithiasis, and cholecystitis are significant contributors to morbidity and mortality in dogs. The exact etiology of these conditions remains poorly understood, though various factors, such as endocrinopathies, dyslipidemia, and impaired gallbladder motility, have been suggested as potential contributors. Surgical intervention has been described as the first choice of treatment when biliary rupture or obstruction is suspected; however, medical management may be an important part of therapeutic or preventative strategy.

Internal tremor (IT) is often reported by patients with post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, also known as Long COVID, as a distressing and disabling symptom. Similarly, physicians are typically perplexed by the nature and etiology of IT and find it extremely challenging to manage. We describe a patient with Long COVID who experienced IT as part of post-COVID postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and small fiber neuropathy (SFN) and review the limited literature available on this topic.

Erythromelalgia, a rare cutaneous pain syndrome, is characterized by acral burning pain and flushing, often alleviated by cold and rest. Primary erythromelalgia is caused by gain-of-function mutations of genes encoding for sodium channels, resulting in hyperexcitability of pain signaling neurons. Due to the increasing pollution of electromagnetic waves and the vigorous development of intelligent electronic devices, there is great interest in finding high-quality electromagnetic wave absorbing materials for integrated control boxes (ICBs) that integrate various electronic components. Polyaniline (PANI) is a new type of absorbing material with great potential due to its designable structure, simple preparation process, low density and adjustable conductivity. Herein, we prepared BCNF/PANI nanoscale conductive fibers with core-shell structure by in-situ growth of PANI on the surface of bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF) by oxidative polymerization and further prepared cellulose/polyaniline/polyvinyl alcohol (BCNF/PANI/PVA) composite aerogel absorbing material by a freeze-drying process.
