Vibronic characteristics and spin-density distributions in the core bacteriochlorin macrocycle were revealed by spectroscopic and theoretical studies of 16 isotopologues. The vibrational modes in copper bacteriochlorin isotopologues were examined via resonance Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The resonance Raman spectra exhibit an exceptional sparcity of vibronically active modes of the core macrocycle, in contrast with the rich spectra of the natural bacteriochlorophylls. The Q-excitation resonance Raman spectrum is dominated by a single mode at 727 cm, which calculations suggest is due to a symmetrical accordion-like deformation of the five-atom C(CNC)C portion of the ring core. This deformation also dominates the vibronic features in the absorption and fluorescence spectra. The spin-density distributions in the π-cation radical of the zinc bacteriochlorin isotopologues were studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The spectra indicate a significant electron/spin density (ρ ∼ 0.1) on each meso-carbon atom. This observation contradicts the predictions of early calculations that have been assumed to be correct for nearly four decades. Collectively, these findings have implications for how the structural features that characterize natural bacteriochlorophylls might influence energy- and electron-transfer processes in photosynthesis and alter the thinking on the design of synthetic, bacteriochlorin-based arrays for solar-energy conversion.

The delocalization length of charge carriers in organic semiconductors influences their mobility and is an important factor in the design of functional materials. Here, we have studied the radical anions of a series of linear and cyclic butadiyne-linked porphyrin oligomers using CW-EPR, H Mims ENDOR and NIR/MIR spectroelectrochemistry together with DFT calculations and multiscale molecular modeling. Low-temperature hyperfine EPR spectroscopy and optical data show that polarons are delocalized nonuniformly over about four porphyrins with most of the spin density on just two units even in the cyclic structures, in which all porphyrin sites are identical.

Engineering Air-Stable Triarylmethyl Radicals with One Pyrrole Ring.

Org Lett

January 2025

School of Chemistry, Engineering Research Center of Energy Storage Materials and Devices, Ministry of Education, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710049, China.

Herein, seven air-stable triarylmethyl radicals (-), each featuring a pyrrole ring, were successfully synthesized. A comprehensive investigation into the linkages at the α-, β-, and -positions of the pyrrole ring, along with various substituents, revealed that the p-π conjugation between the central radical carbon and the pyrrole ring plays a crucial role in the distribution of spin density and overall stability. Notably, radicals to displayed excellent electrochemical and photostability.

In this study, low-temperature EPR spectroscopy and quantum-chemical techniques were employed to investigate multispin systems─1,5-diphenyl-3-(3-nitrenophenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl and 1,5-diphenyl-3-(4-nitrenophenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl─that contain a nitrene center at either a - or -position, respectively. Ground states and magnetic zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of these multispin systems were determined by experimental and computational methods. The results indicated that the high-spin quartet state is a ground state, and the quartet-doublet energy gap is close to 10 kcal/mol for the -position of the nitrene group, with ZFS parameters = 0.

Power spectral density imaging for polymeric films using ex-situ solid-state magnetic resonance with needlelike ferromagnet.

Phys Rev E

Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University, 8-1 Mihogaoka, Ibaraki, Osaka 567-0047, Japan.

An ex-situ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method employing localized magnetic field gradients generated by a needlelike ferromagnet is described. The depth profiling of a multilayer polymeric film using the proposed method and spin density imaging is successfully acquired. The imaging of the variable-frequency spinlattice relaxation rate in the depth direction reveals differences in the spectral density function for molecular dynamics between the surface and interior of the film.

Exploring the properties of new super-chalcogens based on multiple electron counting rules: a combined DFT and study on [M(BCX)] dianion clusters.

The theoretical exploration of the super-chalcogen properties of multi-charged sandwich structures whose geometry simultaneously satisfyies the octet rule and Hückel's 4+2 rule is reported here a case study of dianion clusters [M(BCX)] (M = Be, Mg or Ca; X = H, F or Cl). The properties of these dianion clusters [M(BCX)] are close to or even superior to those of traditional clusters based on separate electron-counting rules, , the octet rule and Hückel's 4+2 rule. At the theoretical level of combined and DFT methods, these clusters, including halogen-substituents (F, Cl) are super-chalcogens due to their high first vertical electron detachment energy (FVDE), of which the largest value is 1.
