We present a route to successfully tackle the two main limitations, low open circuit voltage (Voc) and limited short circuit-density (Jsc), of polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as an electron-donor. The indene-C60 bisadduct (ICBA) was selected as an electron acceptor to improve the open circuit voltage (Voc). The narrow band gap polymer poly[(4,8-bis-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene)-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexanoyl)-thieno[3,4-b]thiophene)-2,6-diyl] (PBDTTT-C), as a complementary electron-donor material, was doped into the host system of P3HT:ICBA to form ternary cascade energy structured PSCs with increased Jsc. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of P3HT:ICBA-based cells was improved from 3.32% to 4.38% by doping with 3 wt% PBDTTT-C with 1 min 150 °C annealing treatment. The 4.38% PCE of ternary PSCs is still larger than the 3.79% PCE of PSCs based on P3HT:ICBA with 10 minutes 150 °C annealing treatment.

The ability to convert light to higher energies through triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) is attractive for a range of applications including solar energy harvesting, bioimaging and anti-counterfeiting. Practical applications require integration of the TTA-UC chromophores within a suitable host, which leads to a compromise between the high upconversion efficiencies achievable in liquids and the durability of solids. Herein, we present a series of methacrylate copolymers as TTA-UC hosts, in which the glass transition temperature ( ), and hence upconversion efficiency can be tuned by varying the co-monomer ratios (-hexyl methacrylate (HMA) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA)).

The integration of fluorinated benzothiadiazole (FBT) into donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers represents a major advancement in the field of organic solar cells (OSCs). The fluorination process effectively fine-tunes the energy levels, reduces the highest occupied molecular orbital levels, and enhances the open-circuit voltages of the polymers. Furthermore, fluorination improves molecular packing and crystallinity, which significantly boosts the charge transport and overall device performance.

This paper explores a novel group of D-π-A configurations that has been specifically created for organic solar cell applications. In these material compounds, the phenothiazine, the furan, and two derivatives of the thienyl-fused IC group act as the donor, the π-conjugated spacer, and the end-group acceptors, respectively. We assess the impact of substituents by introducing bromine atoms at two potential substitution sites on each end-group acceptor (EG1 and EG2).

The natural and laboratory-accelerated weathering of wood-plastic composites (WPCs) based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) plastics was investigated in this study. Injection molded samples of WPCs with different loadings of wood fiber ranging from 0 to 36 wt.% of wood were subjected to laboratory-accelerated weathering and natural weathering.
