Anatomical variations of the stylohyoid apparatus are frequent. Two types can occur: an elongation of the stylohyoid ligament, from a long styloid process to a complete ossified structure connecting the skull base to the lesser horn of the hyoid bone, or the existence of supernumerary bones in the stylohyoid fibrous matrix, which sometimes resembles phalanges. These variations are in the majority of cases bilateral and symmetrical. The authors report the case of a 43-year-old male patient who presented with an unusual unilateral complete ossification of the stylohyoid apparatus, associated with vertebral and laryngeal calcifications. Original latest generation CT scan and three-dimensional MRI imagery are provided to illustrate this rare case.

Case Summary: A 10-year-old male neutered Abyssinian cat was presented with the chief complaint of a right pharyngeal mass. On palpation, the mass was easily palpable; it appeared well demarcated and mobile, and oval in shape. Radiographic examination showed a radiopaque pharyngeal mass, which was revealed to be a well-demarcated mass lesion with a radiopaque marginal area on CT examination.

Eagle's syndrome, a condition associated with the elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, is clinically characterized by throat and neck pain radiating into the mastoid region. The diagnosis can be made through a thorough history, correct clinical and pathological correlation and radiographic examination. The elongated styloid process can be treated conservatively or surgically.

There exists paucity in recorded literature on the detailed microscopic appearance of elongated styloid processes (ESPs) in patients with Eagle's syndrome (ES). Although literature is replete with numerous conflicting and inconclusive theories, the exact cause, mechanism of origin, development and progression of styloid apparatus enlargement remains unclear and ambiguous. To carry out detailed histopathogical examination of excised specimen of ESPs in a patient with ES, with the objective to determine its precise etiomorphogenesis, and to analyse the role of possible triggering factors.

The styloid process sheath (SPS) is a part of the tympanic temporal bone and an incomplete bony sleeve surrounding the styloid process, tympanohyoid cartilage, and dorsal part of the stylohyoid bone. In horses undergoing head CT, we observed a range of SPS sizes and questioned whether differences were early features of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) or normal anatomic variations associated with age, body weight, sex, or breed. We hypothesized that SPS sizes were positively correlated with age and body weight, but not with sex or breed.
