The HindIII-HincII fragment of the 5.5 kbp H11 HindIII clone of ovine herpesvirus 1 (OvHV-1) was cloned and its primary structure was determined by preparation of nested deletion subclones and their sequencing. Sequence analysis of the overlapping clones revealed that 3239 bp OvHV-1 fragment contains complete thymidine kinase (TK) gene, a partial open reading frame of ORF20 and that encoding glycoprotein H (gH). The conserved OvHV-1 TK displayed the highest similarity to homologous TK proteins encoded by members of the Macavirus genus of the Gammaherpesvirinae subfamily. These data including our previous analysis of the partial sequence of VP23 homologue might serve as further evidence that OvHV-1 should be categorized within the genus Macavirus of the Herpesviridae family.

Introduction: Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) is a highly contagious alpha-herpes virus. The diagnosis of chickenpox remains a difficult task especially in cases of breakthrough chickenpox, so the development of reliable laboratory tests is necessary. The simplest and most sensitive serological test for detecting antibodies in human and animal sera is the passive hemagglutination reaction (PHAR).

Abortion is one of the major threats to the livestock industry, and it also poses significant threats to public health since some of the abortifacient agents are considered zoonotic. (), (), (), and Cache Valley virus (CVV) are recognized as important zoonotic and abortifacient agents of reproductive failure in small ruminants. This study determined the prevalence of these agents in ovine and caprine foetuses in Türkiye.

Sheep play an important role in China's agricultural development, but they are also potential hosts for many viruses, some of which have been identified as zoonotic pathogens, which may pose a serious threat to social public health and animal husbandry. Therefore, clarifying the characteristics of viruses in sheep will provide an important basis for the study of pathogenic ecology and viral evolution of viruses carried by sheep. We collected nasal and anal swabs from 688 sheep in 22 counties in Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia, China, between January 2022 and July 2023, and utilized next-generation sequencing technology and bioinformatics approaches to identify the viruses in the samples.

Bovine gammaherpesvirus 6 (BoHV-6) is endemic in cattle in Europe, with a high prevalence. There is evidence that the virus is a commensal and not associated with disease processes. For other gammaherpesviruses, it is known that they have a rather specific target cell spectrum, generally including B cells and, at least in the early phase of infection, the epithelium of the respiratory tract.

The culture-attenuated alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1) C500 strain can be grown to high titre and has been used successfully as a candidate vaccine for wildebeest-associated malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). This vaccine virus was also used to develop an indirect ELISA to allow monitoring of virus-specific antibodies in vaccinated cattle. However the extraction method was expensive and time-consuming, and the resulting test was not suitable for use in sheep.
