To facilitate the next generation of high-power white-light-emitting diodes (white LEDs), the discovery of more efficient red-emitting phosphor materials is essential. In this regard, the hardly explored compound class of nitridoaluminates affords a new material with superior luminescence properties. Doped with Eu(2+), Sr[LiAl3N4] emerged as a new high-performance narrow-band red-emitting phosphor material, which can efficiently be excited by GaN-based blue LEDs. Owing to the highly efficient red emission at λ(max) ~ 650 nm with a full-width at half-maximum of ~1,180 cm(-1) (~50 nm) that shows only very low thermal quenching (>95% relative to the quantum efficiency at 200 °C), a prototype phosphor-converted LED (pc-LED), employing Sr[LiAl3N4]:Eu(2+) as the red-emitting component, already shows an increase of 14% in luminous efficacy compared with a commercially available high colour rendering index (CRI) LED, together with an excellent colour rendition (R(a)8 = 91, R9 = 57). Therefore, we predict great potential for industrial applications in high-power white pc-LEDs.

Narrow band red-emitting phosphors based on organo-Eu(III) complexes prove their energetic features with surprising performance in smart red/white LEDs, sensing, and biological fields. In this report, a series of unique Eu(III) complexes have been synthesized with coumarin integrated with a class of phenanthroline(Phen)/thiabendazole(TBZ) based ancillary ligands and dibenzoyl methane (DBM)/2-theonyl trifluoroacetone (TTA) as an anionic ligand. The computational study reveals that the TBZ/Phen-based neutral ligands are superior energy harvesters to those other reported analogue neutral ligands.

Conventional fluorescent materials frequently exhibit narrow-band emissions with a small full width at half-maximum (fwhm) due to localized-state characteristics, but electroluminescence is less efficient owing to the utilization of only singlet excitons. In this work, taking advantage of naphthalimide (NAI)-acetylide derivatives with a rigid planar structure and localized transition characteristics, we elaborately designed two mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with weak double emissions of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Taking them as synthetic precursors, we prepared three PtAu heteronuclear clusters and successfully attained highly efficient narrow-band red phosphorescence with the fwhm below 30 nm.

While highly efficient red-emitting inorganic phosphors have been discovered in the substance class of alkaline earth oxo(nitrido)lithoaluminates, new narrow-band green- and yellow-emitting components are being sought to improve the performance of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). Various solid-state reactions were carried out under protective gas atmosphere in nickel crucibles and sealed tantalum ampules to synthesize Sr[LiAlO], Sr[LiGaO], and five substitutional derivates of Sr[Li(Al Ga )O] at moderate temperatures. The observation of a linear increase in the unit cell parameters as a function of the increasing gallium mole fraction in Sr[Li(Al Ga )O] revealed Vegard behavior in the solid-solution series, which was derived from powder X-ray diffraction data.

Spinel-Based ZnAlO: 0.5%Cr Red Phosphor Ceramics for WLED.

Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, No. 899 Huiwang East Road, Shanghai 201800, China.

To address the issue of the lack of red light in traditional Ce: YAG-encapsulated blue LED white light systems, we utilized spark plasma sintering (SPS) to prepare spinel-based Cr-doped red phosphor ceramics. Through phase and spectral analysis, the SPS-sintered ZnAlO: 0.5%Cr phosphor ceramic exhibits good density, and Cr is incorporated into [AlO] octahedra as a red emitting center.

The feature of abundant and environmentally friendly heavy atoms (HAs) like bromine to accelerate spin-forbidden transitions in organic molecules has been known for years. In combination with the easiness of incorporation, bromine derivatives of organic emitters showing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emerge as a cheap and efficient solution for the slow reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) problem in such emitters and strong efficiency roll-off of all-organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we present a comprehensive photophysical study of a emitter reported previously and its hexabromo derivative showing a remarkable enhancement of rISC of up to 9 times and a short lifetime of delayed fluorescence of 2 μs.
