Aim: To analyze GDF15 and MMP7 serum levels as diagnostic biomarkers in gastric cancer (GC) patients. The prognostic value of GDF15 and MMP7 serum levels in combination with miR-200c blood expression was also analyzed.

Patients & Methods: Fifty-two GC and 23 control samples were included.

Results: GDF15 and MMP7 proved to be powerful tools for GC diagnosis. Increased levels of GDF15 and MMP7 were associated with shorter progression-free survival and overall survival in univariate analysis. In multivariate analysis, the combination of high levels of GDF15, MMP7 and miR-200c was an independent predictor for death (p = 0.033).

Conclusion: GDF15 and MMP7 serum levels have diagnostic value for GC. The combination marker formed by GDF15, MMP7 and miR-200c is indicative of adverse evolution in GC patients.

Machine learning models are increasingly being used to estimate "brain age" from neuroimaging data. The gap between chronological age and the estimated brain age gap (BAG) is potentially a measure of accelerated and resilient brain aging. Brain age calculated in this fashion has been shown to be associated with mortality, measures of physical function, health, and disease.

Predictive biomarkers of disease progression in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Heliyon

January 2024

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, China.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic interstitial disease that cannot be cured, and treatment options for IPF are very limited. Early diagnosis, close monitoring of disease progression, and timely treatment are therefore the best options for patients due to the irreversibility of IPF. Effective markers help doctors judge the development and prognosis of disease.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research assessed how proteins from senescent cells relate to mobility disabilities in older adults and examined the impact of physical activity on these proteins.
  • * Among nearly 1,400 participants, significant links were found between certain senescence proteins and mobility issues, while physical activity was associated with notable decreases in several senescence-related proteins over time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the correlation of protein measurements between two multiplex technologies: aptamer-based (SomaScan) and proximity-extension immunoassays (OLINK).
  • Findings show moderate average correlations (r = 0.46) between the two methods, with 19% of comparisons having high correlations (r ≥ 0.8).
  • When comparing 18 protein measurements from SomaScan to targeted immunoassays, six showed strong correlations (r ≥ 0.8), while ten exhibited weak correlations (r < 0.5), indicating variability across different testing platforms.
