Background: Package inserts that accompany medicines are a common source of information aimed at patients and should match patient abilities in terms of readability.

Objective: Our objective was to determine the degree of readability of the package inserts for biological medicinal products commercially available in 2007 and compare them with the readability of the same package inserts in 2010.

Methods: A total of 33 package inserts were selected and classified into five groups according to the type of medicine: monoclonal antibody-based products, cytokines, therapeutic enzymes, recombinant blood factors and other blood-related products, and recombinant hormones. The package inserts were downloaded from the European Medicines Agency website in 2007 and 2010. Readability was evaluated for the entire text of five of the six sections of the package inserts and for the 'Annex' when there was one. Three readability formulas were used: SMOG (Simple Measure of Gobbledygook) grade, Flesh-Kincaid grade level, and Szigriszt's perspicuity index.

Results: No significant differences were found between the readability results for the 2007 package inserts and those from 2010 according to any of the three readability indices studied (p>0.05). However, there were significant differences (p<0.05) between the readability scores of the sections of the package inserts in both 2007 and 2010. The readability of the package inserts was above the recommended sixth grade reading level (ages 11-12) and may lead to difficulties of understanding for people with limited literacy.

Conclusions: All the sections should be easy to read and, therefore, the readability of the medicine package inserts studied should be improved.

Expression and purification of recombinant proteins in is a bedrock technique in biochemistry and molecular biology. Expression optimization requires testing different combinations of solubility tags, affinity purification techniques, and site-specific proteases. This optimization is laborious and time consuming as these features are spread across different vector series and require different cloning strategies with varying efficiencies.

Objective: We sought to develop consensus recommendations for measurement and analysis of data on contraceptive-induced menstrual changes (CIMCs) in contraceptive clinical trials. We built upon previous standardization efforts over the last 50 years and prioritized input from a variety of global experts and current regulatory authority guidance on patient-reported outcomes.

Study Design: We completed a formal consensus-building process with an interdisciplinary group of 57 experts from 30 organizations and 14 countries in five global regions who work across academia, nonprofit research organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and funding agencies.

Previous research has shown that organic food labeling may lead consumers to biased processing of their preferences, the physiological mechanisms behind this phenomenon are not understood. For the first time, this manuscript combines consumer valuation and physiological measures to investigate the explicit and implicit preference dimensions of organic food. The explicit dimension was measured using the expected and actual degree of liking of two identical - but differently labeled - pear juices (organic and non-organic) while the implicit dimension was measured using the activity of the mylohyoid muscle (MM) and the 3D kinematics of the hand, and arm movements.

The radiotracer [F]JK-PSMA-7, a prostate cancer imaging agent for positron emission tomography (PET), was previously synthesized by indirect radiofluorination using an F-labeled active ester as a prosthetic group, which had to be isolated and purified before it could be linked to the pharmacologically active Lys-urea-Glu motif. Although this procedure could be automated on two-reactor modules like the GE TRACERLab FX2N (FXN) to afford the tracer in modest radiochemical yields (RCY) of 18-25%, it is unsuitable for cassette-based systems with a single reactor. To simplify implementation on an automated synthesis module, the radiosynthesis of [F]JK-PSMA-7 was devised as a one-pot, two-step reaction.

Microbial contamination is an important factor threatening the safety of Chinese medicine preparations, and microfluidic detection methods have demonstrated excellent advantages in the application of rapid bacterial detection. In our study, a novel optical biosensor was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of in traditional Chinese medicine on a microfluidic chip. Immune gold@platinum nanocatalysts (Au@PtNCs) were utilized for specific bacterial labeling, while magnetic nano-beads (MNBs) with a novel high-gradient magnetic field were employed for the specific capture of bacteria.
