Zn2GeO4 nanorod/graphene composites (ZGCs) were yielded by a two-step hydrothermal processing. Crystalline and amorphous regions were found to coexist in a single Zn2GeO4 nanorod. The surface of the Zn2GeO4 nanorod was compactly covered and anchored by graphene sheets. The ZGCs were then utilized as anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Intriguingly, partially crystalline ZGC containing 10.2 wt % graphene possessed excellent electrochemical performance, namely, high reversible capacity (1020 mA h g(-1) in the first cycle), favorable cyclic performance (768 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles), and commendable rate capability (780 mA h g(-1) at the current density of 0.8A g(-1)). The amorphous region in partially crystalline Zn2GeO4 nanorods and the elastic graphene sheets provided the accommodation of volume change during the charge and discharge processes. These advantageous attributes make ZGCs the potential anode materials for LIBs.

In recent years, increased attention has been given to the effective use of chitin nanofibers (ChNFs). We have developed a method to fabricate thinner chitin nanomaterials, called scale-down chitin nanofibers (SD-ChNFs), by a bottom-up procedure at the nanoscale level, with subsequent disintegration by electrostatic repulsion. The surface modification of SD-ChNFs is anticipated to provide new properties and functions for their practical applications.

Self-powered broadband photodetectors (SPBPDs) hold great potential for next-generation optoelectronic applications, but their performance is often limited by interface defects that impair charge transport and increase recombination losses. In this work, we report the enhancement of the photodetection efficiency of SPBPDs by partially substituting copper (Cu) with silver (Ag) in kesterite CuZnSnS (ACZTS) thin films. Varying Ag concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%) are incorporated into the CZTS layer, forming a TiO/ACZTS heterojunction in superstrate configuration fabricated via a low-cost sol-gel spin-coating technique with low-temperature open air annealing avoiding conventional postdeposition sulfurization or selenization.

Whole utilization of okara has important economic value, but there are two technical barriers: coarse mouthfeel caused by insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) and undesirable "beany" off-odors. UV-A irradiation and/or microbial fermentation were used to modify okara. The results indicated that single and combined treatments increased the soluble dietary fiber (SDF) content.

Hard-to-cook (HTC) beans are characterised by extended cooking times. Although the changes in cell walls limiting hydration in HTC beans are widely investigated, the role of macro-molecules (starch and protein, which constitute >80 % of beans) are almost overlooked. This study investigates the structural changes in starch associated with the HTC quality in faba and adzuki beans stored at contrasting temperature and humidity regimes.

Nanoparticulate electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction are structurally diverse materials. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has long been the go-to tool to obtain high-quality information about their nanoscale structure. More recently, its four-dimensional modality has emerged as a tool for a comprehensive crystal structure analysis using large data sets of diffraction patterns.
