Sample pre-concentration is crucial to achieve high sensitivity and low detection limits in lab-on-a-chip devices. Here, we present a system in which self-propelled catalytic micromotors are biofunctionalized and trapped acting as an alternative concentrating mechanism. This system requires no external energy source, which facilitates integration and miniaturization.

Quantum Material-Based Self-Propelled Microrobots for the Optical "On-the-Fly" Monitoring of DNA.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Future Energy and Innovation Laboratory, Central European Institute of Technology, Brno University of Technology (CEITEC-BUT), 61200 Brno, Czech Republic.

Quantum dot-based materials have been found to be excellent platforms for biosensing and bioimaging applications. Herein, self-propelled microrobots made of graphene quantum dots (GQD-MRs) have been synthesized and explored as unconventional dynamic biocarriers toward the optical "on-the-fly" monitoring of DNA. As a first demonstration of applicability, GQD-MRs have been first biofunctionalized with a DNA biomarker (i.

Based on the exceptional and new opened biosensing possibilities of self-propelled micromotors, a micromotor-based immunoassay (MIm) has smartly been designed for C-reactive protein (CRP) determination in plasma of preterm infants with sepsis suspicion. The design of the micromotors involved the electrosynthesis of a carbon-based outer layer (for antibody functionalization), an intermediate Ni layer (for magnetic guidance and stopped flow operations) and PtNPs inner catalytic layer (for catalytic bubble propulsion). Micromotors biofunctionalization on the outer layer (using carbon black (CB), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and biocompatible propulsion capabilities, were carefully studied.

Nutrient Transport Driven by Microbial Active Carpets.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2018

Institut für Theoretische Physik II: Weiche Materie, Heinrich-Heine-Universität, D-40225 Düsseldorf, Germany.

We demonstrate that active carpets of bacteria or self-propelled colloids generate coherent flows towards the substrate, and propose that these currents provide efficient pathways to replenish nutrients that feed back into activity. A full theory is developed in terms of gradients in the active matter density and velocity, and applied to bacterial turbulence, topological defects and clustering. Currents with complex spatiotemporal patterns are obtained, which are tunable through confinement.
