Bioinspired multicompartmental microfibers are generated by novel capillary microfluidics. The resultant microfibers possess multicompartment body-and-shell compositions with specifically designed geometries. Potential use of these microfibers for tissue-engineering applications is demonstrated by creating multifunctional fibers with a spatially controlled encapsulation of cells.

Neuromorphic cognitive computing offers a bio-inspired means to approach the natural intelligence of biological neural systems in silicon integrated circuits. Typically, such circuits either reproduce biophysical neuronal dynamics in great detail as tools for computational neuroscience, or abstract away the biology by simplifying the functional forms of neural computation in large-scale systems for machine intelligence with high integration density and energy efficiency. Here we report a hybrid which offers biophysical realism in the emulation of multi-compartmental neuronal network dynamics at very large scale with high implementation efficiency, and yet with high flexibility in configuring the functional form and the network topology.

Multi-compartmental MOF microreactors derived from Pickering double emulsions for chemo-enzymatic cascade catalysis.

Bioinspired multi-compartment architectures are desired in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, as credited by their cell-like structures and intrinsic ability of assembling catalytic species for spatiotemporal control over cascade reactions like in living systems. Herein, we describe a general Pickering double emulsion-directed interfacial synthesis method for the fabrication of multicompartmental MOF microreactors. This approach employs multiple liquid-liquid interfaces as a controllable platform for the self-completing growth of dense MOF layers, enabling the microreactor with tailor-made inner architectures and selective permeability.

Bioinspired Jellyfish Microparticles from Microfluidics.

Research (Wash D C)

January 2023

Department of Clinical Laboratory, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China.

Nonspherical particles have attracted increasing interest because of their shape anisotropy. However, the current methods to prepare anisotropic particles suffer from complex generation processes and limited shape diversity. Here, we develop a piezoelectric microfluidic system to generate complex flow configurations and fabricate jellyfish-like microparticles.

Bioinspired design of amphiphilic particles with tailored compartments for dual-drug controlled release.

Inspired by the phenomenon of water droplets hanging over rose petals, we propose a green interfacial self-assembly strategy to construct amphiphilic particles with controllable compartments for dual-drug encapsulation and controlled release. The method involves fabrication of "sticky" superhydrophobic materials, assembling superhydrophilic hydrogel beads with "sticky" superhydrophobic material into an amphiphilic particle, and amphiphilicity induced self-organization of several small amphiphilic particles into a large-sized amphiphilic multicompartmental particle. With the employment of this approach, amphiphilic particles with tailored sizes, controllable morphology, and tunable numbers of compartments are successfully constructed.

May 2019

Department of Bioengineering , University of California, Los Angeles , California 90095 , United States.

Nanomedicine development aims to enhance the efficacy, accuracy, safety, and/or compliance of diagnosis and treatment of diseases by leveraging the unique properties of engineered nanomaterials. To this end, a multitude of organic and inorganic nanoparticles have been designed to facilitate drug delivery, sensing, and imaging, some of which are currently in clinical trials or have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the process, the increasing knowledge in understanding how natural particulates, including cells, pathogens, and organelles, interact with body and cellular systems has spurred efforts to mimic their morphology and functions for developing new generations of nanomedicine formulations.
