We present the advancement in the research of the dispersion of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in thermotropic calamitic liquid crystals. The formation/behavior of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in GNPs is briefly described. The uniform dispersion of GNPs into liquid crystals along with two important aspects, i.e. tuning of GNP properties by liquid crystal and vice versa, are widely discussed. Overall, the article highlights the advances in the research into GNP-liquid crystal composites in terms of their scientific and technological aspects.

In the course of pipe jacking construction, the carrying-soil effect frequently arises, influenced by factors such as excavation unloading, ongoing disturbance from successive pipe sections, and the progressive accumulation of soil adhesion. The pipe jacking slurry serves as a critical agent for friction reduction and strata support, essential for the secure advancement of the construction process. This study introduces the Microbial-Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) technology into the realm of pipe jacking slurry, aiming to enhance its friction-reduction capabilities and the stability of the soil enveloping the pipe.

A chicken protein hydrogel (HG) was enzymatically prepared and blended with a carnauba wax-based oleogel (OG) to form bigels (BG) in ratios of 50:50 to 90:10. These systems were infused with thyme essential oil (TEO) at 0.5 %, 1 %, and 2 % v/v to harness its antioxidant properties.

This study presents an eco-friendly, cost-effective approach for synthesizing highly efficient nanocatalysts with the help of organic waste. Iron nanoparticles (INPs) were synthesized from aqueous extracts of potato, potato peel, and potato leaf and were evaluated for their photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of methylene blue dye. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confirmed FeO nanoparticles cubic crystal structure with the smallest crystallite size (9.

Sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) is a device for biological denitrification, in which electrons produced by sediment microorganisms can be transferred to the upper layer of the water column lacking electron donors. However, the low efficiency of denitrifying bacteria in acquiring electrons and enriching at the cathode greatly hinders the application of SMFC for nitrogen removal. In this study, we report a novel method of constructing a high-performance biocathode by modifying electrodes with zero-valent iron to enhance the enrichment and electron transfer of electroactive bacteria.

Gelatin is a natural hydrocolloid with excellent film-forming properties, high processability, and tremendous potential in the field of edible coatings and food packaging. However, its reinforcing by materials such as cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is often necessary to improve its mechanical behavior, including shape memory properties. Since the interaction between these polymers is complex and its mechanism still remains unclear, this work aimed to study the effect of low concentrations of CNC (2, 6, and 10 weight%) on the molecular organization, thermomechanical, and shape memory properties in mammalian gelatin-based composite films at low moisture content (~10 weight% dry base).
