The classical elasticity cannot effectively describe bone's mechanical behavior since only homogeneous media and local stresses are assumed. Additionally, it cannot predict the dispersive nature of the Rayleigh wave which has been reported in experimental studies and was also demonstrated in a previous computational study by adopting Mindlin's Form II gradient elasticity. In this work Mindlin's theory is employed to analytically determine the dispersion of Rayleigh waves in a strain gradient elastic half-space. An isotropic semi-infinite space is considered with properties equal to those of bone and dynamic behavior suffering from microstructural effects. Microstructural effects are considered by incorporating four intrinsic parameters in the stress analysis. The results are presented in the form of group and phase velocity dispersion curves and compared with existing computational results and semi-analytical curves calculated for a simpler case of Rayleigh waves in dipolar gradient elastic half-spaces. Comparisons are also performed with the velocity of the first-order antisymmetric mode propagating in a dipolar plate so as to observe the Rayleigh asymptotic behavior. It is shown that Mindlin's Form II gradient elasticity can effectively describe the dispersive nature of Rayleigh waves. This study could be regarded as a step toward the ultrasonic characterization of bone.

From variational principles we develop the Hamiltonian formalism for generally anisotropic microstructured materials, in an attempt to extend the celebrated Stroh formulation. Microstructure is expressed through the indeterminate (or Mindlin-Tiersten) theory of couple-stress elasticity. The resulting canonical formalism appears in the form of a differential algebraic system of equations, which is then recast in purely differential form.

Sex determination, the developmental process by which sexually dimorphic phenotypes are established, evolves fast. Evolutionary turnover in a sex determination pathway may occur via selection on alleles that are genetically linked to a new master sex determining locus on a newly formed proto-sex chromosome. Species with polygenic sex determination, in which master regulatory genes are found on multiple different proto-sex chromosomes, are informative models to study the evolution of sex determination and sex chromosomes.

In this paper, we derive a nonlinear strain gradient theory of thermoelastic materials with microtemperatures taking into account micro-inertia effects as well. The elastic behaviour is assumed to be consistent with Mindlin's Form II gradient elasticity theory, while the thermal behaviour is based on the entropy balance of type III postulated by Green and Naghdi for both temperature and microtemperatures. The work is motivated by increasing use of materials having microstructure at both mechanical and thermal levels.

Language change involves the competition between alternative linguistic forms. The spontaneous evolution of these forms typically results in monotonic growths or decays, such as in winner-take-all attractor behaviors. In the case of the Spanish past subjunctive, the spontaneous evolution of its two competing forms (ending in -ra and -se) was perturbed by the appearance of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1713, which enforced the spelling of both forms as perfectly interchangeable variants, at a moment in which the -ra form was predominant.
