Polydopamine (PDA) is easily available by oxidation of dopamine and is widely used for persistent coatings of various materials. It is hitherto considered to be inert in many interesting biomedical and other applications. Results presented here, reveal an unexpected behavior of polydopamine as an organocatalyst in direct aldol reactions under mild conditions. Evidence was found for dual catalysis making use of amino and phenolic hydroxy groups found in PDA. Thus scientists must be aware that PDA is not an innocent polymer and can cause unwanted side effects in important applications, such as in biomedicine or as supports in catalysis.

Developing high-activity and long-term stable electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) to valuable products is still a challenge. An in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms and the structure-function relationship is required for the development of an advanced catalytic eCO2RR system. Herein, a coordination polymer of indium(III) and benzenehexathiol (BHT) was developed as an electrocatalyst (In-BHT) for eCO2RR to HCOO-, which displayed an outstanding catalytic performance over the entire pH range.

Pushing redox potentials to highly positive values using inert fluorobenzenes and weakly coordinating anions.

While the development of weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) received much attention, the progress on weakly coordinating and inert solvents almost stagnated. Here we study the effect of strategic F-substitution on the solvent properties of fluorobenzenes CFH (xFB, x = 1-5). Asymmetric fluorination leads to dielectric constants as high as 22.

Deuterium Isotope Effect in Single Molecule Photophysics and Photochemistry of Hypericin.

The peripherical protons of the dye molecule hypericin can undergo structural interconversion (tautomerization) between different isomers separated by a low energy barrier with rates that depends sensitively on the interaction with local chemical environment defined by the nature of host material. We investigate the deuterium (D) isotope effect of hypericin tautomerism at the single-molecule level to avoid ensemble averaging in different polymer matrices by a combined spectroscopic and computational approach. In the 'innocent' PMMA matrix only intramolecular isotope effects on the internal conversion channel and tautomerization are observed; while PVA specifically interacts with the probe via H- and D-bonding.

Recovery of europium from E-waste using redox active tetrathiotungstate ligands.

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are critical to our modern economy, yet their mining from natural ores bears a profound environmental impact. Traditional separation techniques are chemical and energy-intensive because their chemical similarities make REEs very challenging to purify, requiring multiple extraction steps to achieve high purity products. This emphasizes the need for sustainable and straightforward separation methods.

Redox Synergy: Enhancing Gas Sensing Stability in 2D Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks via Balancing Metal Node and Ligand Reactivity.

Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates in gas sensing, owing to their tunable porous structure and conductivity. Nevertheless, the reported gas sensing mechanisms heavily relied on electron transfer between metal nodes and gas molecules. Normally, the strong interaction between the metal sites and target gas molecule would result poor recovery and thus bad recycling property.
