The static 1D (13)C and 2D Proton Encoded Local Field (PELF) NMR experiments are carried out in the nematic phase of a less viscous liquid crystal 4-(trans-4'-hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT) with a view to find orientational order. The PELF spectra provide better resolution which facilitates the assignment of cyclohexyl and phenyl ring carbons relatively easy. For the cyclohexyl unit, four pairs of dipolar splitting are clearly noticed in contrast to earlier reports on structurally similar mesogens where only two pairs of doublets are seen. The linear relationship between anisotropic chemical shifts and orientational order is established and semi-empirical parameters are obtained to aid the study of the order behaviour of 6CHBT over the entire nematic range. The data further fitted to the Haller equation and a reasonably good agreement is observed. The temperature dependence trends of orientational order parameters extracted for various carbons using (13)C-(1)H dipolar couplings with those of (13)C chemical shifts are compared. A gradual decrease in the order parameter is noticed for different molecular segments while traversing from the core to the aliphatic chain via the cyclohexyl ring. The notable decreasing trends of order parameters along the chain are observed similar to those of the corresponding phenyl cyclohexanes reported earlier.

The ligand-docking behavior of hevein, the major latex protein from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis (Euphorbiaceae), has been investigated by the unguided molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. An oligosaccharide molecule, initially placed in an arbitrary position, was allowed to move around hevein for a prolonged simulation time, on the order of microseconds, with the expectation of spontaneous ligand docking of the oligosaccharide molecule to the binding site of hevein. In the binary solution system consisting of a hevein molecule and a chito-trisaccharide (GlcNAc) molecule, three out of the six separate simulation runs successfully reproduced the complex structure of the observed binding from.

Metal-nonaqueous solution interfaces, a key to many electrochemical technologies, including lithium metal batteries, are much less understood than their aqueous counterparts. Herein, on several metal-nonaqueous solution interfaces, we observe capacitances that are 2 orders of magnitude lower than the usual double-layer capacitance. Combining electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and physical modeling, we ascribe the ultralow capacitance to an interfacial layer of 10-100 nm above the metal surface.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the Yale Swallow Protocol (YSP) in detecting aspiration in recently extubated patients.
Method: One hundred fifty-four participants referred for swallowing evaluation underwent the YSP and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) in random order within 48 hr of extubation. The YSP included orientation questions, an oral motor exam, and a 3-oz water swallow test.

Natural teeth fulfill functional demands by their heterogeneity. The composition and hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanostructured orientation of enamel differ from those of dentin. However, mimicking analogous materials still exhibit a significant challenge.

Background: Worldwide, hospitals are responsible for restoring health. However, poorly executed processes in these institutions can lead to risks and harm to patients, especially in identifying drug related problems. This fact justifies the proposal of tools to support the diagnosis, management and resolution of these problems.
