An inclusion complex of NaYF4 :Yb(3+) ,Er(3+) upconversion nanoparticles with α-cyclodextrin in aqueous conditions exhibits luminescence quenching when excited at 980 nm. This non-radiative relaxation leads to an unprecedented photoacoustic signal enhancement. In vivo localization of α-cyclodextrin-covered NaYF4 :Yb(3+) ,Er(3+) is demonstrated using photoacoustic tomography in live mice, showing its high capability for photoacoustic imaging.

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has garnered significant research attention. Achieving a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) is a key challenge in this field. Herein, we reported, for the first time, the fabrication of a chiral assembled film consisting of chiral D-/L-Selenium nanoparticles (D-/L-Se NPs) and DSPE-PEG-NH2 modified upconversion nanoparticles (DPNUCNPs) with remarkable CPL properties that were generated by the interfacial self-assembly technique.

The application of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for cell and tissue analysis requires a comprehensive understanding of their interactions with biological entities to prevent toxicity or harmful effects. Whereas most studies focus on cancer cells, this work addresses non-cancerous cells with their regular in vitro physiology. Since it is generally accepted that surface chemistry largely determines biocompatibility in general and uptake of nanomaterials in particular, two bilayer surface coatings with different surface shielding properties have been studied: (i) a phospholipid bilayer membrane (PLM) and (ii) an amphiphilic polymer (AP).

Upconverted circularly polarized luminescence (UC-CPL) active organic and organic-inorganic composite materials have garnered increasing attention due to their vast potential applications in areas such as 3D displays, encryptions, spintronics and optoelectronic devices. However, effective methods for fabricating chiral inorganic materials exhibiting UC-CPL remain a challenge. Herein, we propose an approach for the synthesis of UC-CPL active chiral mesostructured CeO2 powders (CMCs) via a hydrothermal growth method, using L/D-aspartic acid as symmetry-breaking and structure-directing agents.

Nowadays, optical tweezers play a vital role not only in optical manipulation but also in bioassay. As principal optical trapping objects, microbeads can combine optical tweezers with suspension array technology, with amply focused laser beams and adequately concentrated tags contributing to highly sensitive detection. In view of the inefficiency of conventional single-trap optical tweezers, multitrap systems are developed.

Therefore, it is very important to develop sensitive miRNA-155 analysis methods for the early diagnosis, treatment, and prognostic evaluation of cervical cancer. In this study, a near-infrared light-driven fluorescent biosensor based on the metal-enhanced fluorescence effect of polydopamine-coated upconversion nanoparticle (UP/Au) and two toehold-mediated strand displacement (TMSD) steps was constructed for the detection of miRNA-155.
