Background: The differentiation between association and causation is a significant challenge in medical research, often further complicated by cognitive biases that erroneously interpret coincidental observational data as indicative of causality. Such misinterpretations can lead to misguided clinical guidelines and healthcare practice, potentially endangering patient safety and leading to inefficient use of resources.
Methods: We conducted an extensive search of PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases up to March 2024, identifying circumstances where associations from observational studies were incorrectly deemed causal.

Aircraft pitot tubes are sophisticated instruments designed to detect airflow pressure and relay this information to onboard computers and flight instruments, enabling the calculation of airspeed through the measurement of total-static pressure differences. The formation of ice on aircraft pitot tubes can compromise the acquisition of airspeed data, misguide pilots, and potentially cause catastrophic flight control failures. This article introduces a predictive methodology for identifying critical conditions that lead to icing on aircraft pitot tubes.

Background: Despite decades of pursuing health equity, racial and ethnic disparities persist in healthcare in America. For cancer specifically, one of the leading observed disparities is worse mortality among non-Hispanic Black patients compared to non-Hispanic White patients across the cancer care continuum. These real-world disparities are reflected in the data used to inform the decisions made to alleviate such inequities.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diagnostics is characterized by the biologically relevant combination of analytes in order to obtain disease-related data patterns that enable medically relevant interpretations. The necessary change in knowledge bases such as barrier function as a diffusion/CSF flow model and immunological networks of B-cell clones and pleiotropic cytokines is considered. The biophysical and biological principles for data combination are demonstrated using examples from neuroimmunological and dementia diagnostics.
