The clinical and microbiological features of four patients with positive cultures for Enterobacter sakazaii are reported. They corresponded to two wound exudates, one appendicitis and one newborn conjunctivitis. The biochemical and physiological characteristics of this organism are analyzed (inability to ferment d-sorbitol and production of a non-diffusible yellow pigment); its difficult identification and the clinical rarity of its isolation are discussed. The relevant literature is reviewed.
